Hands off Harry !!
The whole of Whitby will be praying that local rivals Scarborough will not be trying to proze away Whitby Town manager Harry Dunn, following the seadogs relegation to the Conference. Harry, who is under contract to the Blues until 2002, is understood to be keen on managing a conference side, but would prefer that team to be Whitby Town, a team he has built and groomed himself.
There is also news that the Blues are to knock down the old main stand to make way for a brand new stand with seats and covered terracing. Anybody passing the Turnbull could always give us all an update on the seasiders mailing list.
Accrington Stanley 1-1 Whitby Town
1st May - A late penalty from Accrington Stanley left the Blues in seventh place after their final Unibond Premier League game today. It was Whitby who took early control and their pressure paid off just before half time when Darren Ward's shot was handled outside the area and David Logan thumped the ball home from the resulting free kick. The Stanley equaliser came in the 81st minute when Paddy Kenny downed Hheaney in the area and the Stanley striker converted the penalty himself. Typical of Whity Town's luck this season, if they had won Today they would have finished in 5th place, but seventh in their first season at this level is a fine achievment. A big well done to Harry and the lads.
Whitby Town 0-0 Guiseley
29th April - Whitby Town were saved from defeat in tonights Unibond League game at the Turnbull Ground. Playing their final game at home for this season, Whitby were always second best to an impressive Guiseley side. Patrick Kenny pulled off numerous saves to deny the West Yorkshire side and ensure that the Blues came away with a vital point.
Whitby Town 4-1 Spennymoor United
24th April - Whitby Town got back to winning ways with a fine four one victory over Spennymoor at the Turnbull today. The Blues hit the net first in the 17th minute with a fine twenty yard effort from Kenny Goodrick leaving former Blues stopper Dave Campbell with no chance.
The Moors replied immediately from a corner when their No 5's header hit the bar and flew in. Whitby were awarded a penalty in the 37th minute when Micky Waller's shot hit Cammy and before Robinson could finish it off he was fouled. Dave Logan duly slotted home to give the Blues a 2-1 half time lead. Carl Chillingsworth headed home in the 71st minute and then the crowd were pleased to see the return to action of Paul Pitman after a lengthy absence. Yakka had a goal disallowed when his first touch found the net, but John Borthwick shot home to finish off the scoring and give the Blues the three points.
Whitby Town 1-2 Gateshead
20th April - Whitby Town lost tonights unibond league game against Gateshead at the Turnbull Ground. The game was played in appalling conditions after non stop rain had nearly brought about the postponment that it needed. The Blues started brightly and were unlicky to have a goal ruled out for offside in the 16th minute, but took the lead 4 minutes later. A free kick was awarded on the half way line and Kenny Goodrick punted the ball into the box, when everyone missed it it just rolled into the net. Gateshead adapted better to the conditions in the second half and two good goals in the 48th and 85th minutes gave them the three points.
Whitby Town 4-0 Frickley Athletic
13th April - Whitby Town cruised to an easy 4-0 victory over Frickley Athletic in tonight Unibond league encounter at the Turnbull Ground. On a bitterly cold night full of Snow!! It was the blues who took the lead in the first minute through Carl Chillingsworth, the ball trickling over the line. Gavin Kelly played in the Frickley goal and he was picking the ball out of the back of the net in the 43rd minute when Paul Stoute scored a screamer. With Whitby in a dominant mood thes econd half saw Chilli add his second and Whitby's third in the 52nd minute after some good work from the Seasiders. Ddarren Ward completed the scoring in the 85th minute slotting home from 6 yards after a cross from the left. This win sends the Blues up to 6th place in the table and the possibilites of a good finish in their first season in the Unibond League.
Emley 0-1 Whitby Town
10th April - Whitby Town stopped their losing run with a fine 1-0 victory away to Emley. It was on this ground a month ago that the Blues tricky spell started but they made amends with a Dave Logan goal. Playing against the wind in the first half it was always Whitby's game. They played their better stuff in this half and took the lead on 30 minutes when Dave Logan smashed the ball home from a freekick. The Blues failed to take advantage of the strong wind in the second and Emley were rarely seen on the attack. John Borthwick who was an early substitution for Steve Haddon, had an inspired game winning everything in and around the midfiled area.
Hyde United 3-2 Whitby Town
5th April - Whitby lost their third away game in a row today going down 3-2 to Hyde United. Following is blatently nicked from the Hyde United web page. Early pressure from Whitby ended when Toman headed a free-kick past the post after slack marking from Hyde. Simon Yeo burst away from the Town defence but pushed the ball too far ahead of himself and Kenny raced out to pick up the loose ball. The Tigers took the lead on 9 minutes when PRINCE MONCRIEFFE rose above Kenny to head in Lloyd Richardson's corner from close range. Kojoe Taylor made a mistake at the back which let in CARL CHILLINGSWORTH who calmly slotted past Edgington at level the scores on 33 minutes. Kurt Edgington made a good save low to his right after Robinson had headed a corner towards the post. Whitby took the lead from the penalty spot on 60 minutes after Kojoe Taylor had fouled, DAVID LOGAN forcefully shot home, the power beating Edgington. Hyde stepped up a gear after this with Haw shooting just wide, Lloyd Richardson clipping the post from 20 yards and Paul Taylor forcing a cracking save from Kenny. On 75 minutes, Richard Annan played the ball through to Chris Dolby who turned on a sixpence before firing a low, hard cross which SCOTT BRENCHLEY converted from close range. On 80 minutes close play on the right led to Brenchley flicking the ball up for MIKE TURNER to head home his first for The Tigers and take all three points.
Stalybridge Celtic 2-0 Whitby Town
3rd April - After playing some of their best football of the season away at Worksop on tuesday, Whitby Town managed to produce their worst display at Stalybridge today. Celtic took hte lead in the 16th minute when they scored after a corner. They increased their lead in the 36th minute after a good run gave Patrick Kenny no chance. In the second half the expected Whitby onslaught never materialised and even though Stalybridge were happy to sit back Whitby didn't ever threaten the side they beat so well last Saturday. Whitby are in danger of letting an excellent first season in the UL Premier slip into a poor season if they are not careful.
Worksop Town 2-1 Whitby Town
30th March - Whitby Town travelled to Notts tonight to face last season's closest rivals Worksop Town. The Blues had only been beaten once on their travels in the league this season, but went down 2-1 to the Tigers. Worksop have an excellent home record this season winning 14 out of 18 games and this victory has returned them to the top of the table. The game was lost by the Blues after the referee awarded two very dubious penalties for the home side. Whitby also had two very good claimed waved away and were left to rue the typical UL decisions fromthe ref. Darren Ward scored from close rang to pull the score back to 2-1 but it was too much too late. Whitby's defence has now conceded 4 penalties in their last 3 games. Ben Dixon was sent off in injury time for complaining to the ref, but the luck had been with Worksop all game.
Whitby Town 4-1 Stalybridge Celtic
27th March - Relishing a return to the striker's role, Graham Robinson hit form again for the Blues today against Stalybridge Celtic. Whitby Town never lost control of the game and went ahead in the 9th minute when Robinson headed in from Dave Logan's free kick. The adavntage was increased in the 13th minute when a Robbo run allowed Chillingsworth to tee up John Borthwick, who duly fired home. Stalybridge got a chance to get into the game in the 36th minute when they were awarded a penalty after Micky Waller handled and Powell fired powerfully home. Whitby increased their advantage 5 minutes later when Robbo scored his second from Andy Toman's corner. Whitby never looked likely to leak a goal in the second half and Substitute Darren Ward headed home with his first touch in the 77th minute, to round off a comfortable victory. Whitby travel to Worksop on Tuesday night for a meeting in the league with last yearsdivision one rivals. Patrick Kenny has also signed for the Blues until the end of the season on loan.
Whitby Town 1-0 Bamber Bridge
23rd March - Whitby Town proved once again why they are the Unibond Leagues Jekyll and Hyde team with a fine victory over second placed Bamber Bridge. The Blues took the lead in the 4th minute when Carl Chillingsworth roamed in with the ball from the touch line and drilled a fierce shot past the Bamber Bridge keeper. BB were awarded a penalty in the 15th minute but the spot kick was brilliantly saved by Patrick Kenny in the Blues goal. Before this there was a comical incident when the Bamber Bridge tried to clear and hit John Borthwick in the back with the ball. The ball rolled back to the keeper who did exactly the same thing again, but missed the rebound. Borthwick pounced the mistake but hit the side netting!! Whitby were never really in any trouble for the rest of the game and had the best of the possession in both half. It ended up being a comfortable victory for the Blues.
Whitby Town 0-0 Runcorn
20th March - Whitby Town managed to produce another poor home performance to bore the suffering home fans to death today. The opponents, lowly Runcorn, who have been having a hard time of it lately could count themselves unlucky in the end after forcing new Keeper Kenny into some good saves. Whitby's best chance came in the first quarter of the game when Chilli hit the post and the ball rebounded safely into the keepers arms. Hh e also missed a sitter later on but it was one of those days when the ball was definitely not going in the net. Blues will have to pick themselves up again for the visit of high flying Bamber Bridge on tuesday night. That report may be late due to the fact that i'm working down south at the moment and won't be back until sunday !!
Lancaster City 0-1 Whitby Town
13th March - Whitby Town got back to winning ways in todays Unibond premier league game at Lancaster. The Blues gave a debut to on loan keeper Patrick Kenny. Whitby took the lead on the 20th minute when Pitman and Chillingsworth exchanged passes and Chilli slotted home into the bottom corner with a shot on the turn. In the 35th minute a goalmouth mellee resulted in Goodchild and Lancaster's Kennedy being sent off for violent conduct. The second half saw the Blues take control and with the wind behind their backs they made the home keeper pull of a few good saves. The home side only threatened in brief periods and the Blues stayed in control to leave with all three points.
Weather beats the Blues !
Todays game with Bamber Bridge was called off this morning due to a waterlogged pitch. It seems to have been raining in Whitby for the last three weeks and it's rumoured that Noah has been seen down town recruiting animals and ship builders for some hairbrained scheme involving a huge ark.
New Keeper in on loan
5th March - Whitby Town have signed Goalkeeper Patrick Kenny on loan from Bury until the end of the season. Former Notts County and Scarborough boss, Neil Warnock was happy to business with the Blues, but is unfortunately, keen on signing the ever improving Chris Hudson. With the arrival of Kenny, it appears Gavin Kelly's days could be numbered after a few costly errors in recent weeks.
Gainsborough Trinity 2-0 Whitby Town
2nd March - Whitby Town's proud away record was finally ended tonight with a 2-0 reverse at the hands of Gainsborough Trinity. The Blues, who hammered the Lincolnshire side 5-0 earlier in the season, were clearly suffering an FA Trophy Hangover. Two away defeats in a row is unusual for us and a clash at home on Saturday with Bamber Bridge, who are currently top of the the UL Premier, is the Blues next challenge. This is the first time that Whitby Town have lost two in a row in the league under Harry Dunn's stewardship.
Emley 2-0 Whitby Town
27th February - How one team can dominate a game so much and lose is beyond me. Whitby Town were knocked out of the FA Trophy today after two first half goals from Emley. The first was an own goal from Micky Waller and the second a bizarre header when Kely and the striker clashed on the edge of the area. The Blues then hit the bar, had shot cleared off the line and the Emley keeper Rhodes made amazing saves. The second half belonged totally to Whitby with on a constant attack. Again they were denied by the bar the keeper and last ditch defending. Chance after chance went begging and basically we should have won. In windswept conditions and a sloping pitch it was Emley who had the best of the early exchanges but it was the Bles who finished the half the more dominant. The second half was all whitby as I've already mentioned, but we just lacked that cutting edge. Top marks to the Blues fans. There must have been 450 there at least. Excellent support.
Remaining games arranged and Chorley get a Bum deal.
23rd February - Whitby Town's remaining fixtures for the rest of the season have been arranged with only the NRSC tie with Guisborough Town left to be sorted. The Blues have a hectic April with 8 games arranged to be played. Whitby's plight is nothing compared to Chorleys though, as the following message from a Chorley fan will explain. "At the time of writing (Sunday, Feb 21), Chorley F.C. have 11 league games left and are out of all the cups. The Unibond season finishes on May 1, yet Chorley's last scheduled game is April 10. This would be most unfair under any circumstances, but what makes it worse is the fact that the club is in serious danger of relegation. Chorley will be playing 2 games per week from February 27th until the end of our season, whilst our relegation rivals (Spennymoor, Accrington Stanley and Bishop Auckland) all finish on May 1 or the week before, despite the fact that Spennymoor and Bishops have actually played more games than Chorley ". A crazy situation and totally unfait on Chorley as it gives their relegation rivals a big advantage. Let's hope that the league see sense and hope it never happens to us.
Winsford United 0-2 Whitby Town
20th February - Whitby Town travelled to Cheshire today to play the highly rated Winsford United. The Blues were looking for revenge after Septembers defeat at the Turnbull, and it ended up being a comfortable victory. Harry Dunn was away spying on Emley in prepartion for next weeks FA Trophy clash, but that didn't stop the Blues from carrying on their impressive away form. Whitby took the lead in the 28th minute when Ben Dixon headed in at the far post from Dave Logan's cross. Gavin Kelly had little to do in the Blues goal, and Paul Pitman was denied on a couple of occassions due to good saves from the Winsford keeper. Whitby made the game safe in the 72nd minute when Pitman slotted home after more good work from Chillingsworth. It now all steam ahead for next weeks cup tie.
Whitby Town 4-3 Colwyn Bay
13th February - Whitby Town were on the right end of a seven goal encounter in today's Unibond League game at the Turnbull. Whitby were always the team on the attack and the scoreline didn't fully reflect the Blues dominance. Whitby took the lead on the half hour when Chillingsworth rounded the keeper and shot home from a tight angle. Blues should have had more before half time but the second half began with Colwyn Bay showing more pupose. Tthe welshmen equalised through Mottram in the 57th minute when headed in a rebound after Graham's effort had hit the bar. Bay then took a shock lead when Graham raced through to beat Kelly, but within a minute the Blues were back level when Chilli shot home. Paul Pitman then scored two goals in two minutes to give the Blues the lead. His first on 76 minutes came from a Toman through ball, then on the 78th minute Chilli was the provider. Colwyn Bay then reduced the arrears in the 81st with Graham racing through. Blues were still pressing forward to the end and Paul Stout came close to giving the Blues a more comprehensive scoreline.
It's EMLEY next for the Blues
8th February - Whitby Town will have to travel away to fellow Unibond Premier side Emley in the 5th round of the FA Trophy. The tie will be played on Saturday 27th February. It is maybe a good draw for the Blues in so much as it's away and not at home! The Blues played last years FA Cup heroes earlier in the season at the Turnbull and ran out 1-0 winners. Graeme Williams has broken his wrist and is having an operation on it today on Teesside. Jock didn't realise he had scored Saturday's winner as he lay in agony on the floor, until the rest of the team jumped on top of him!!
Aylesbury United 0-1 Whitby Town
6th February - Whitby Town produced a fantastic performance in Buckinghamshire today, to defeat Aylesbury United 1-0 in front of a crowd of 901. Every member of the side deserves praise but David Goodchild and Chris Hudson were simply magnificent and rock solid in defence. Whitby never let the ducks get into their game and harried and hassled them all the way. It was a pretty even first half with few chances but it was fair to say that Whitby were more than holding their own. With Aylesbury expected to come out with all guns blazing in the second half, the Blues suffered a big blow 5 minutes in. Robinson jumped up for ball knocked in but got a slight shove and he deliberately handled the ball when it was going out for a goal kick. To the utter dismay of the travelling fans the Referee went from bad to worse, sent Robbo off as he'd already been booked in the first half. The lads reorganised and kept Aylesbury at bay with some ease. Whitby had the best attempts on goal when Yakka was put through down the left with the keeper to beat, but the keeper did well to block. Chilli then came close when he got on the nd of a long cross but his header went inches wide. In the 85th minute Graeme Williams sped down the right hand side and on a couple of occassions apeared to have lost it but still on the touch line he launched in a cross which evaded everyone hit the left post and rebounded in off the keeper. Jock was injured and left the field. The ref played up the injury time and the ducks had one last chance to score form a free kick in range but the effort went over, the ref blew and the Blues were through. BRILLIANT!!
Whitby
Town 4-0 Northallerton
3rd February - Whitby's
North Riding Senior Cup game against Arnott Insurance Northen League side
Northallerton, turned out to be an embarassingly one sided affair tonight.
The opposition barely made past the half way line as the Blues streamed
forward on a constant attack. It wasn't until the 40th minute that Pitman
scored after a great run from Robinson. Blues were on the attack all of
the second half but had to wait until the last ten to get their just rewards.
On 80 minutes Toman scored from a header and a minute Pitman grabbed his
second of the game and his 8th in 7 games. A Logan penalty in the 88th
minute sealed things for the Blues.
Game off, but Newton
goes !
30th January - Whitby
Town's away game with Colwyn Bay was called off today, but that didn't
stop our pal Andy Newton leaving Whitby for North Wales to watch the Blues.
He left at 7.30 despite the fact that the pitch inspection was at 8.30
! Poor Newton ! The lack of action mean't that the Blues have dropped to
11th place in the tightly packed Unibond premier. Whitby are also at home
to Northallerton in the NRSC in mid week, before next weeks FA Trophy game
with Aylesbury United. Aylesbury warmed up the game with a 6-1 demolition
of Boreham Wood in their Rymans league game today. If Harry was watching
then i'm sure he'll have some plan up his sleeve !
Stockton 0-5 Whitby
Town
26th
January - The Blues began their defence of the North Riding Senior
Cup tonight with a comfotable 5-0 away win over Arnott Insurance Northen
League High Flyers Stockton. Goals from Toman, Chillingsworth, Pitman,
an own goal and a blinder from mystery man did the trick for the Blues.
The win was overshadowed by the sad news that Whitby Town chief scout Bob
Dewhurst died yesterday after a short illness. Bob will be missed by everyone
concerned with WTFC, and will be remembered as a man who helped assemble
the team that we have today.
Aylesbury next in Trophy
for the Blues
25th January - Whitby
Town discovered who their next opponents will be in this seasons FA Trophy
4th round tonight, when Aylesbury United defeated Newport (IoW) 2-0 at
The Stadium tonight. The tie will be played on Saturday 6th February at
Aylesbury. The route to take for visiting fans is as follows. From the
Buckingham direction, the ground is situated on the outskirts of town on
the left. From all other directions follow signs for the A413 to Buckingham.
The ground is on the outskirts of town on the right (suprisingly enough).
See you all there!!
Whitby
Town 1- 4 Altrincham
23rd January - Whitby
Town faced their toughest test at home today against high flying and big
spending Altrincham. With a decent crowd inside the Turnbull, it was Altrincham
who drew first blood, when Chambers tapped in after a cross from the left
was flicked on. Whitby started to get themselves back into the game and
finally equalised when Paul Pitman struck in the 30th after some neat football
from the Blues. Whitby appeared to be holding their own, but with the behind
Altrincham in the second half the Cheshire side played their aces. On 55
minutes Chambers burst from what looked like an offside position to make
the score 2-1, and he claimed his hattrick in the 78th when he scored after
being a clear 2 yards offside. Chambers made it 4-1 to the robins in the
87th with a fine solo effort to compound the Seasiders misery. Overall,
Altrincham showed that they have the class and the toughness for promotion,
exposing Whitby's poor home form. They are the best team to play at the
Turnbull this season, but Whitby can take heart from the fact that we are
new this level, and we'll be there one day.
Whitby
Town 2-1 Frickley Athletic
19th January - Whitby
Town made it through it the 4th round of the FA Trophy tonight with a hard
fought 2-1 victory over Frickley Athletic. The Blues had the worst possible
start when Frickley took the lead after a goalmouth melee, when Chris Hudson
failed to clear a corner. Frickley had a lot of pressure but Whitby held
firm, and in the 36th minute Paul Pitman shot the Blues level after some
great work from Andy Toman. Two minutes later Athletic were awarded a penalty
when Kelly hauled their man down, and can thank himself lucky that the
ref was in a lenient mood. The penalty was poor though, and Gavin made
amends by saving it. Ten minutes into the second half it was John Borthwick
who gave the Blues the lead after more good work from Toman. The Blues
were never in any danger from then on, and despite a poor overall performance
they did enough to see themselves through to a tie with Aylesbury Utd or
Newport (IOW). Their game was called off and is now due to be played on
Monday 25th January.
Trophy draw sets Blues
potential nightmare
18th January - The
FA Trophy draw was made earlier today and the winner of tomorrow's game
at the Turnbull between Whitby Town and Frickley Athletic will have to
travel away to Aylesbury United or Newport from the Isle of Wight. Aylesbury
are currently 2nd with games in hand in the Ryman Premier division and
are evrybodies favourites for promotion, whereas Newport (IOW) are 9th
in the Dr Martens southern division, a lower level than the Unibond Premier.
Tough game guaranteed if we can see off Frickley Ath.
Trophy game off
16th January - Whitby
Town's FA Trophy 3rd round tie with Frickley Athletic has been called off
due to a waterlogged pitch. Nobody has set foot on the turnbull for 2 weeks
but the poor weather has made the game unplayable. It is hoped that the
game can now go-ahead on Tuesday.
Runcorn
2-3 Whitby Town
9th January - Whitby
Town again showed why they are the best away side in the Unibond league
with a 3-2 victory against Cheshire side Runcorn. It was Runcorn who took
the lead in the 6th minute when Worthington shot home from the edge of
the area after a corner was headed out to him. The Blues equalised in the
24th minute when Pitman put Toman through to beat the keeper. In the 42nd
minute Toman Yakka and Borthwick combined well for Chilli to hit home from
close range. Runcorn got back on level terms on the hourwhen Randall did
well to cross for Salt to score. Whitby scored the winner seven minutes
later when Yakka got his third goal in three games at the second attempt.
Whitby hung onto the lead which moves us back up the table. Next week it's
the FA Trophy 3rd round tie against Frickley. Harry must wish we played
away every week !
Happy New Year to all
in Canada !
Mr Charlie Woodward,
the super secretary of Whitby Town FC has asked me to wish our Canadian
ex-pats a Happy New Year. This goes out to Mr Tony Gill and his family
who live in Vancouver. Charlie says "Tony, it's still your round" !! There
is also a reminder to all you ex-pats out there in North America and Down
Under that signing up to the WTFC mailing list will keep you up to date
with all the news from the Turnbull.
Leigh
RMI 2-2 Whitby Town
2nd January - Whitby
Town travelled to Leigh for their Unibond premier match toady and were
desperately unlucky not to have come away with all three points. The Blues
dominated the game, but were caught out on the stroke of half time when
Chilli lost possession and Leigh fired home. The second half started in
similar fashion with Whitby having all the running and in the 71st minute
the Leigh keeper could only parry Logan's shot and Ben Dixon slotted home
the rebound. Blues looked to have done enough when they went ahead in the
82nd minute, Yakka firing home after good work from Borthwick. 3minutes
into injury time Leigh broke away and the Blues were left to rue 2 points
dropped.
Whitby
Town 5-1 Gainsborough Trinity
28th December - Whitby
finally gave the home fans something to cheer about with a fine 5-1 victory
over Gainsborough Trinity. It was Trinity who opened the scoring when Kelly
misjudged a corner and the ball flew in directly. Whitby had all the possession
and found it hard going on a sticky pitch, but Gainsborough had a glorious
chance to make it 2-0 but they somehow managed to hit the bar and defenders,
enabling the Blues to counter upfield and Kenny Goodrick thumped the ball
home. Five minutes later it was Kenny again who turned and shot home from
a similar position. At half time Harry put Yakka on in place of Pev, and
with the first action of the half, it was Yakka who ran through to place
the ball past Cherry. On the hour Chilli thumoed a fine header into the
back of the net from Tomans corner, and Robbo sealed the rout with ten
minutes left after Yakka's knock back.
Frickley
Athletic 3-3 Whitby Town
26th December -
Whitby Town travelled to south Yorkshire today for a Unibond league game
against Frickley Athletic. With the wind and rain howling down, it Frickley
who started the brightest, but they never really looked likely to to take
advantage. Sixteen minutes into the half Toman gave away a free kick around
25 yards out, and Green stepped up to smash the ball into the net. On 40
minutes it was two nil to Frickley when the Whitby defence failed to clear
a corner and the Green again managed to get a foot to it and the ball spun
past a stricken Gavin Kelly. The second half started with Whitby attacking
like crazy with Mitch Cook and Chilli on in place of Goochie and Jock.
With Cook going down the left side of the box, he appeared to have lost
the ball when the ref gave a mystery penalty for kicking I think? Logan
stepped up and put the ball away. Frickley were rattled and 13 minutes
later it was 2-2, Borthwick looked up 35 yards out and chipped the keeper.
Then in the blink of an eye the Seasiders were 3-2 up when a mazy Chilli
run enabled Toman to put Peverell through to poke the ball past the adavancing
keeper. Frickley hit back with a late header through sub Brooks that their
second half performance barely deserved, but there were chances at both
ends. Mondays report will be very late.
Whitby
Town 2-3 Hyde United
18th December
- Whitby Town blew a great chance to move up the table today when they
lost to Hyde United. The Blues were in confident mood following Tuesdays
excellent away win at Guiseley, but as usual the home curse struck again.
It was Hyde who took the initiative when they took the lead in the 13th
minute, but after some sustained pressure from the away side it was Whitby
who scored next, Nick Peverell heading home. The second half started with
the wind on Whitby's back but again Hyde scored to take a 2-1 lead. Dave
Logan pulled the scores level from the penalty spot in 70th minute, but
Hyde wouldn't lie down and wrapped the game up in the 75th minute to make
the final score 3-2. Harry must be concerned with the continuing poor home
performances, especially when the team play so well away from home.
Guiseley
0-3 Whitby Town
15th December
- Whitby Town continued with their impressive away form with an excellent
victory of another of the Unibond form teams, Guiseley. With a strong wind
on their backs it was the Blues who had the early possession coming close
on a couple of occassions. In the 15th minute Whitby were awarded a freekick
some 35 yards out, enabling Dave Logan to blast home for the lead. Blues
went further ahead 11 minutes later when Nick Peverell forced the ball
home from Andy Toman's inswinging corner. Whitby were expecting a Guiseley
fightback during the second half, but the Blues stuck to their task and
went 3-0 up on 56 minutes when Logan slammed home a penalty. He then had
the chance to make it a hattrick from the spot, but hit the bar. One minute
later Guiseley had the chance to pull a goal back but they blasted yards
wide. Blues hung on with some ease to wrap up the three points. Tonights
victory means that the Blues have lost only once away from home in the
league in 20 months !! An amazing achievment.
Bamber
Bridge 1-1 Whitby Town
12th December
- Whitby Town travelled to in form Bamber Bridge for todays Unibond league
game, and left with a creditable draw. Bamber Bridge have been really banging
them in recently, but after a goaless first half it was the Blues who took
the lead with a cracking David Goodchild header in the 50th minute. Bamber
Bridge drew level five minutes later when Cliff fired home from a good
cross, but half way through the half Bamber Bridge had Greenwood sent off.
Whitby were unable to take advantage of the situation and came closest
to scoring with two minutes remaining when Andy Toman drove millimeters
wide. So a point earned for the Seasiders, and an amazing sixth away draw.
With a tough Away game at Guiseley on Tuesday, it could become a make or
break point in the season for Harry's lads.
Stalybridge Farce
wastes Blues time
Whitby Town travelled
to Manchester on saturday for their game against Stalybridge Celtic, only
to find that the pitch was Ashford and Simpson (solid as a rock). The Stalybridge
chairman in his wisdom has declared the pitch fit at 9.30am that morning
instead of getting in a local referee as is the case with most clubs. The
wasted journey was put to good use by the Blues fans who got to go and
see Martin Regan play for Harrogate Town against Ashton United, but that
game was also called off half way through. Paul Sumpton, the author of
the excellent Harrogate
Town web page, told me that the seasiders were making one hell of a
racket!!
Game off against
Stalybridge
5th December - Todays
game against Stalybridge Celtic was called off. This means that Whitby
have now dropped to 12th place in the Unibond league, but have plenty of
games in hand.
WHITBY
TOWN 1-1 CHORLEY
28th November -
Whitby Town let a couple of vital points slip again at home to bottom of
the table Chorley. Blues made a great start when an excellent through ball
from Chilli put Robinson through to slot home after 8 minutes. But it went
downhill from there and Whitby sat back and allowed Chorley the time to
drag themselves back into the match. After missing an earlier chance to
increase the lead through Robbo, the Blues let the Lancashire side equalise
from a corner. New signing Nicky Peverill came on in the second half and
had a good game, but Whitby, although they showed some lovely touches,
struggled on the heavy Turnbull pitch.
Trophy draw brings
back memories
Whitby Town have
been handed a home Draw in the FA Trophy third round, against fellow Unibond
premier league team Frickley Athletic. The game brings back memories of
83/84 when the Blues had their best ever run in the Trophy reaching the
quaterfinals. On the way Whitby put out Frickley 2-0 with the Legendary
Derek Hampton slamming in the winner in front of 2,000 fans.
WHITBY
TOWN 4-0 BEDWORTH UNITED
21st November -
Whitby Town captain Neil Hodgson broke his leg this afternoon, during the
Blues' FA Trophy 2nd round tie against Midlands outfit Bedworth United.
In a cruching challenge with a Bedworth player Hodgy was left prone, and
the game was held up for some time as he was prepared for Hospital. It
is expected that he will miss the rest of the season. On the playing front,
Whitby took the lead with a minute on the board when Toman headed home
a Logan Corner. Robbo, on his return to the Turnbull, made it two nil after
ten minutes, and Carl Chillingsworth scored the Third on the half hour
mark. Whitby were proving to be a class above their opponents, and Bedworth
were reduced to tem men on the stroke of half time, after David Goodchild
was tripped cynically. With ten men, Bedworth sat back hoping to keep the
numbers down, and the Blues didn't score again until the 80th minute when
Andy Toman got his second. Blues are now through to the third round of
the Trophy for the first time in 15 years.
WHITBY
TOWN 1-2 GATESHEAD
14th November -
Whitby Town were knocked out of the Unibond Challenge cup today at the
Turnbull. Tthe Blues who started with Yakka up front for the first time
this season, took the lead on 43 minutes through Bottomley. The Blues had
had the best of the first half but couldn't keep the momentum going in
the second period. Gateshead equalised through Kitchen in the 59th, and
then scored a late winner after a goalmouth scramble in the 81st. Fletcher
was sent off for his second bookable offence for the Tynesiders, but it
didn't matter as Whitby had let a lead slip again at home.
News galore from
the Turnbull
Whitby Town secured
the return of GRAHAM ROBINSON today. The striker who had been told to return
to Gateshead by the FA ha resigned for the Blues after becoming a virtual
outcast at the tyneside club. It is not known if a fee was agreed.
Whitby Town
have also signed former Middlesbrough and Bishop Auckland striker NICKY
PEVERILL. He has been plying his trade in Singapore after scoring over
40 goals for Bishops two seasons ago. Neither Peverill or Robbo will be
available for tomorrows Unibond league challenge cup game against Gateshead
but both should be available for next weeks FA Trophy game against Bedworth
United.
Meanwhile PAUL
PITMAN showed Harry Dunn what he's been missing this week with a brace
of goals in a friendly against the reserves. Yakka, who's been out for
the whole season, is desperate for first team action, and this was the
perfect reminder to Harry. Question is, who's for the chop with the abundance
of strikers at harry's disposal ??
WHITBY
TOWN 3-2 ACCRINGTON STANLEY
7th November 1998
- Whitby Town got back to winning ways in todays league game against Accrington
Stanley at the Turnbull Ground. In front of the lowest crowd of the season,
a disappointing 469, it was Stanley who took the lead on the 21st minute,
from a cracking volley from just outside the box. Whitby, who had not taken
advantage of the strong wind blowing in their favour, finally scored to
draw level, when Logans freekick hit the back of the net. With their tails
up, it was the Blues who scored next when Chillingsworth scored with a
spectacular overhead kick after 30 minutes. Chilli then made it a brace
after 41 when he headed in Logans free kick. Stanley pulled a goal back
in the 55th minute after Kelly had made a brave effort, but the Blues hung
on to make it a first league home win for a long time. David Logan was
outstanding for Whitby.
ROBBO IS A GATESHEAD
OUTCAST !!
Graham Robinson
has become a virtual outcast at Gateshead since his enforced return from
the Blues. It transpires that he is not even been allowed to train with
the Tynesiders or travel on the team coach let alone get a game. It is
also rumoured that Gateshead want £5,000 for him, the fee that Whitby
received from the original transfer. There is apparantly, no way that the
Blues will stump up that sort of cash, so unless Gateshead relent, Robbo
is in for a long wait. Meanwhile, Yakka and Harry Dunn appear to be at
loggerheads about his fitness. The club who are anxious to get Yakka back
in the first team, want Yakka to get fit whilst on loan to a lower league
club for a month or two. Yakka, it seems, wants to stay at the club, get
fitter and fight for his place, so stalemate has been reached. Bad news
for the Notts and Derby branch of the supporters club. The Worksop game
on saturday 14th November has been cancelled, with no explanation given
by the Sandy Lane club.
WHITBY
TOWN 0-2 MARINE
31st October - Whitby
Town produced one of their worst displays of the season today to cap an
awful week for club. Lowly Marine took all three points with two late goals
after some poor football from Whitby all game. With Robbo gone and Yakka
nowhere to be seen, the Blues are starting to look a little bit short of
ideas at the moment, and our habit of giving away daft goals has been a
real cause for concern this season. The smallest crowd of the season turned
up expecting to see the Blues cruise through against Marine, who haven't
been having the best of it this season, but Whitby made no impression on
the Merseysiders, who wheather the storm and left Turbull with all three
points.
WHITBY
TOWN 3-1 BLYTH SPARTANS
27th October - Whitby
Town made it safely through to the second round of the FA Trophy tonight
with a fighting display against Blyth Spartans. Blues started brightly
with both Chilli and Martin Regan going close early on. Gavin Kelly also
made a fine save, before Blyth took the lead in the 18th minute when Goochy
put through his own net. Blues got back into just before half time, with
a super goal by Chilli, he beat two palyers on the edge of the box before
curling the ball into the roof of the net. After Toman had had a goal disallowed
for offside it was Mike Waller who scored his first goal for Whitby in
the 60th minute, that gave us the lead. Blyth had their sub dismissed for
flooring Goochy, and in the 85th Former Blues midfileder Alderson had the
chance to equalise from the spot, but Kelly made a superb save. Whitby
then went straight up feild and scored their third through Martin Regan.
Protest dismissed
by FA
26th October - The
FA has thrown out Whitby Town's protest over the Bedlington player. The
FA accepted that the error was just a clerical mistake and nothing untoward.
Bedlington will now play Stafford Rangers on saturday, while Blues Entertain
Marine in a rearranged game. Meanwhile the FA Trophy draw has pitted the
winners of Tuesday's replay against Bedworth United of the Dr Martens Midland
division. More Bad news for the Blues was confirmed today with the news
that Graham Robinson has been ordered to return to Gateshead. What the Blues have
done wrong is anybodies guess. A bad day at the office for Blues fans.
BLYTH
SPARTANS 2-2 WHITBY TOWN
24th October - Whitby
Town will need another replay in a cup competition after a 2-2 draw away
at Blyth Spartans today. Blyth were looking to avenge their 5 goal mauling
from the other week and made a better effort than last time. Whitby had
a lot of early pressure, but never really lokked like scoring. The first
real action came at the other end when a Blyth break saw Chris Hudson haul
the man down and Blyth awarded a penalty. Hudson recieved his marching
orders and Edgecome stepped up for Spartans, but Gavin Kelly saved ! In
the 37th minute Dave Logan was tripped in the box and he stepped up to
convert the spot kick. Five minures later Chilli was brought down again
and the ref pointed to the spot. Logie stepped up and blasted it home.
Spartans hit back just before the break. The second half saw Blyth take
advantage of their man advantage and the pressure paid off when they equalised
with 10 minutes to go. Both teams had their chances to win it, but a replay
is the outcome on Tuesday night.
CUP HEARING ON MONDAY
AFTERNOON
24th October - Whitby
Town have officially compained to the FA about the mix-up at wednesday's
cup replay with Bedlington Terriers. The FA will conduct the hearing into
the matter on Monday afternnon, following the FA Trophy draw. Bedlington
claim that the mistake was a clerical error and are being supported by
the Northumberland FA. This kiddie says that there can only be one result.
Disqualify them. If Hucknall Town can lose three points for registering
a player one day late, but still before he played, then there can be no
leniency on Terriers part. It's not as the two players names were even
similar !!!! John Sokuluk / Warren Teesdale Hmmmmmm.
CUP REPRIEVE ?
22nd October - Whitby
Town could be handed a back door route to the fourth qualifying round after
it transpired that Bedlington Terriers had fielded an ineligable player
during last nights match. The player in question even took one of the penaltys
that knocked the Blues out. Bedlington officials addmitted the mistake
and we all now wait to hear if any punishment is forthcoming/
BEDLINGTON
TERRIERS 1-1 WHITBY TOWN aet (Bedlington win 4-3 on pens)
21st October - Whitby
Town's FA Cup dream for this season died a death tonight at the hands of
old NL rivals Bedlington Terriers. With a place in the fourth qualifying
round against Stafford Rangers at place, it was the Blues who drew first
blood just before half time when John Francis scored his first of the season.
Terriers equalised in the second half and the stalemate couldn't be broken.
Extra time brought no goals for the second time this season Bedlington
were involved in a penalty shoot out. Unfortunately for the Blues it was
to be the Terriers night again. Whitby now travel to Blyth Saprtans on
saturday for an FA Trophy first round tie and face the prospect of being
knocked out the two premier competions in four days!!
FA CUP 4Q DRAW
19th October - The
draw for the 4th qualifying round of this season's FA Cup has given the
Blues the chance to play Stafford Rangers from the Dr Martens Midland division.
This is of course, depending on whether or not we can finish the job against
Bedlington Terriers on wednesday night. Stafford are currently mid table
in their league which is the Dr Martens equivalent of Unibond Division
one.
WHITBY
TOWN 1-1 BEDLINGTON TERRIERS
17th October 1998
- Whitby Town had to settle for a draw in today's FA Cup 3rd qualifying
round at the Turnbull ground. Blues fans were expecting a bumper game after
wednesday's demolition of Blyth but in attrotious condition, Bedlington
proved more than a match for the Blues. Whitby had the best of the fist
peroid and took lead shortly after the break when Chris Hudson's shot was
deflected in. Terriers attacked right through the half and managed to salvage
a deserved draw in injury time. Blues fans were delighted to see the return
of Paul Pitman who returned after Work commitments, albeit for a mere two
minutes or so. The replay is on wednesday at Bedlington when Chilli will
return.
BLYTH
SPARTANS O-5 WHITBY TOWN
13th October - Whitby
Town did what they had been promising to do all season tonight by thumping
Blyth Spartans 5-0 at croft park. With three key players missing through
injury, Harry Dunn suprised many by leaving top scorer Graham Robinson
on the bench. Blues started well and came close after 2 minutes when Carl
Chillingsworth forced a great save. The breakthrough came in the fifth
minute when Mitch Cook's 20 yard powerblaster deflected off John Borthwick
and hit the back of the net. Chilli made two after 19 minutes with an excellent
lob and the third came in the 30th minute when Chilli got his second when
the keeper missed an inswinging corner and he blasted home from 4 yards.
Any chance of a Blythrecovery was snuffed out in the 57th minute when Robbo,
on at half time, Knocked home after chilli's shot was saved. The hattrick
came for Chilli in the 79th minute after a knock down from Robbo. A great
result for the Blues. Come on!!
WHITBY
TOWN 1-2 LANCASTER CITY
11th October - Whitby
Town have now gone an amazing seven games since their last league victory.
The last win for the Blues was against Wednesday's opponents Blyth Spartans
on September 8th !! In todays game at the Turnbull ground the 628 crowd
saw a disappointing performance from a well below par Blues. After totally
dominating the game on wednesday against Worksop, Whitby found Lancaster
a different proposition all together. Lancaster were always the better
team from start to finish and they opened the scoring after 24 minutes
when a Graham freekick deflected off John Francis giving Kelly no chance.
The Blues went in for the break 2-0 down when Lancaster hit their second
on the stroke of Half time through top scorer Peter Thompson. With the
crowd expecting Whitby to come out with all guns blazing, the game carried
on in a similar vein, but Andy Toman managed to grab a goal back in the
59th minute when the keeper failed to hold his powerful shot. The onslaught
never materialised and the Blues ended up slumping to their third home
defeat of the season. With Graham Robinson due to start a suspension following
Wednesday's sending off, the Blues will be getting increasingly desperate
for a change of fortune. Lets keep faith with Harry Dunn and his lads,
as you've got to take the rough with the smooth.
WHITBY
TOWN 1-1 WORKSOP TOWN
6th October - Whitby
Town played some of their best football at the Turnbull ground tonight
but it still wasn't enough to overcome last season's rivals Worksop Town.
In a game totally dominated by the Blues, it wasn't until the 27th minute
of the game before the first goal arrived. A high ball over the top caused
confusion in the Whitby defence and hesitation between Chris Hudson and
Graeme Williams gave the Worksop striker the chance to bang the ball in
from 18 yards. After this point it was Whitby Town all the way, with Kenny
Goodrick hitting the post and having a shot cleared off the line. In the
43rd minute, Whitby were dealt a blow when Robinson was sent off for an
apparent elbow. This didn't stop the Blues pressure and after attack upon
attack in the 85th minute it was sub John Borthwick who powered home a
header to send the Turnbull ground potty. This was the type of display
Blues fans have been waiting for, and despite the loss of two points, it
shows that Harry's team is beginning to gel as we all expected it would.
FA CUP 3Q DRAW
Whitby Town FC will
have to wait to see who they will play in the next round of the FA Cup.
They were drawn against Bedlington Terriers or Bamber Bridge. The Bedlington
Tie would be particulally mouthwatering for Blues fans, as the old Northern
League rivals have made another good start to the season. Blues game against
Bamber Bridge was called off last month, but they are also a side that
we would fancy our chances against. The game will be played at the Turnbull
ground on October 17th.
WHITBY
TOWN 4-2 ACCRINGTON STANLEY
3 October 1998 -
Whitby Town made it through to the 3rd qualifying round of this season's
FA Cup after overcoming 10 man Accrington Stanley at the turnbull ground
today. The game began evenly but it was the Blues who took the lead on
8 minutes when Andy Toman chipped the keeper after finding himself unarked
in the box. Stanley hit back 9 minutes later when Black's shot took a wicked
deflection. Tomlinson was sent off after 37 minutes for kicking Goochy
right in front of the referee. The Blues took the initiative from the off
in the second half and they went back in front when Dave Logan scrabled
the ball home after keeper Speare had madea brilliant save from Toman.
Robinson struck the third in the 70th when the defender hesitated after
a hopeful punt. He then added a fourth in hte 84th to make it safe for
the Blues. O'Callaghan pulled a last minute goal back for Accrington, but
the game was over long since. Just a note to say that the Accrigton Stanley
keeper Jamie Speare was one of the best i've ever seen. He kept the score
down with some blistering saves.

BISHOP
AUCKLAND 1-1 WHITBY TOWN
30th SepteMber 1998
- Whitby Town's poor run of results continued tonight against bottom of
the table Bishops. A Robbo goal from a Hodgy free kick was the only thing
the travelling fans had to cheer. But it was a late penalty that got Bishops
the draw after Andy Toman handled in the area. The draw means that the
Blues haven't won a game for five games, possibly the worst run since Harry
Dunn took charge. The trend is sure to change as anyone who has seen the
Blues in the past month Knows that the luck is most definitley against
them. Lets hope for a Cup run starting on Saturday against Accrington Stanley.
WHITBY
TOWN 1-2 WINSFORD UNITED
26th September 1998
- Whitby Town lost their second Unibond league game today when they went
down 2-1 at home to Cheshire side Winsford United. The Blues were looking
to end a series of disappointing results, but it never looked like the
luck was in today. John Francis gave the Blues fans the only thing to cheer
at the Turnbull right at the end from Logan's free-kick. After dominating
the possession for the majority of the game, Whitby got caught again by
the sucker punch. Twice Winsford broke away to score when the Blues should
have already been in the lead. The first came in the 60th minute when Shaunessy's
powerful drive beat Kelly after a quick break away and the second came
late on when substitute Peel beat the defence with Kelly off his line.
Winsford were a big strong side and Chilli couldn't cope with the defence,
and it wasn't until Martin Regan came on that the Blues attack looked effective.
With the defence taking a hammering, it looks like Harry Dunn will have
to change his thinking against Bishop Auckland in Midweek.
Blues draw Accrington
in FA Cup rd 2
Whitby Town wil
play Accrington Stanley in the second qualifying round of this seasons
FA Cup. The game will be played at the Turnbull ground on Saturday October
3rd.
MARINE
3-3 WHITBY TOWN
19th September 1998
- Whitby Town's defensive errors again came to haunt them on Merseyside
today. From a strong position, being 2-1 in front, they managed to slip
behind when Marine number seven Morgan hit a Hat-trick. It wasn't until
the final minute of the game that Robinson grabbed the equaliser. Whitby
had taken the lead when John Borthwick struck in the 10th Minute, but hit
back on the half hour through Morgan. The Blues regained the advantage
in the 48th minute when Graham Robinson slotted home, but Morgan struck
again in the 62 minute to bring the scores level. When Marine made it 3-2
with only six minutes left, it appeared that the Blues had thrown away
another in the last moments, but Robinson was on hand to grab the equaliser
at the death to give us a share of the spoils.
GATESHEAD
1-1 WHITBY TOWN
16th September 1998
- Whitby Town went to Tyneside to play Gateshead tonight, a team who were
three leagues above them 2 years ago. The result was a draw, which was
a good sign for Blues fans after saturdays defeat at the ahnds of Leigh.
Graham Robinson was making a return to the International stadium after
playing for Gateshead in the Conference last year. Blues took the lead
in the 58th minute when Carl Chillingsworth pounced, but Gateshead salvaged
a draw with a late goal through Scott.
WHITBY
TOWN 0-2 LEIGH RMI
12th September 1998
- The Blues suffered their first league defeat today at the hands of Leigh
RMI. In a game where we never looked likely to score, Leigh struck two
second half goals to disappoint the 700 plus crowd. Whitby had the best
of the first half with Richie Alderson hitting the bar and both Graham
Robinson and Kenny Goodrick failing to capitalise in front of goal. Gavin
Kelly misjudged the the bounce for the first in the 63rd minute allowing
evans to nod home and the second came 13 minutes later. Brady nicked the
ball off Chris Hudson when he delayed clearing the ball. So after a daft
defeat, all be it against a good team, Harry Dunn now has to pick the lads
up for the big game in mid week at Gateshead.
WHITBY
TOWN 2-1 BLYTH SPARTANS
8th September 1998
- Richie Alderson's first goal in the league for Whitby Town grabbed all
the points in tonights game at the Turnbull. The Blues had much the better
of the first half and eventually took the lead with a header from Paul
Bottomley after a cross from the right in the 37th minute. Richie Alderson
grabbed the second in the 43rd minute when the keeper could only parry
his shot, and he slotted home the rebound. Blyth Spartans came out more
determined in the second half and grabbed a goal back in the 53rd minute
Whitby had two goals disallowed during the half to the annoyance of the
860 crowd. The Blues hung on to their lead with some solid defending to
ensure another win and a move up to second place in the table behind fellow
newboys Worksop Town.
CHORLEY
2-2 WHITBY TOWN
5th September 1998
- Whitby Town were robbed in todays Unibond league game against Chorley.
The Chorley equaliser coming in the seventh minute of stoppage time, after
they had pulled a goal back in the final minute of normal time. Everything
had gone right for the Blues up to that point with two second half goals
seemingly securing the points. The first goal came on 64 minutes when Jock
Williams crossed from the right, John Borthwick headed across goal and
John Francis shot home. Tthe second came in the 77th minute, when Graham
Robinson beat the keeperafter running on to a clever through ball fron
Andy Toman. In the last minute of normal time Potts pulled a goal back
with a 30 yarder, and then with seven minutes of over time played, McCluskey
scrambled home Chorley's equaliserwith the last kick of the game, after
a goalmouth melee.

WHITBY
TOWN 1-0 EMLEY
31st August 1998
- A thirty yard thunderbolt from John Borthwick secured the points for
the Blues at the Turbull. Against a spirited and experienced Emley side
the Blues had a couple of early scares during the first half, but came
into their own after the break. Richie Alderson twice going close in a
matter of minutes. When Chillinsworth replaced Ffrancis midway through
the half, Whitby picked up the pace, and after some poor Linesman desisions
it was left to Borthwick to seal it seven minutes from time. The game saw
the welcome return of Graeme Williams at right wing-back. Nice to see his
return.
ALTRINCHAM
1-1 WHITBY TOWN
29th August 1998
- Whitby Town travelled to Altrincham today to play their third league
game in the Premier division. Altrincham with former league stars Brian
Kilcline and Andy Dibble playing took the lead in the 11th minute through
Russell. The Blues were finding it tough going with Gavin Kelly making
some excellent saves. It wasn't until the 80th minute that The Seasiders
got the breakthrough. Graham Robinson cracking in a volley from 12 yards
to give the lads a share of the spoils. Graeme Williams is apparently returning
from th USA to rejoin the club this week, so the squad couldn't be in better
shape.
SPENNYMOOR
UNITED 4-5 WHITBY TOWN
25th August 1998
- The Blues made it two out two in an amazing game at brewery field, Spennymoor,
tonight. The conditions were difficult with the wind and rain giving the
teams something to think about, but it was the blues who had the best of
the opening exchanges with Francis and Robinson going close. The lead finally
came our way when Kenny Goodrick's shot was deflected in the Moor's goal
after 36 minutes. The second half began with the blues on the attack again
and in the 47th Minute David Logan's 20 yard curling free-kick gave the
blues a two goal advantage. A defensive error saw Spennymoor pull a goal
back through sub Bowes, but Robinson was on hand in the 61st minute to
with a header to restore the two goal cushion. Spennymoor's Rightson was
sent off for violent conduct, but that didn't stop a second Moor's goal
through Bowes. Robinson sidefooted in from six yards on 77 after a thru
ball from Regan, but once again poor defending allowed Bowes to complete
his Hat-trick to bring the score back to 4-3. Carl Chillingsworth Scored
after 88 minutes and then Moors responded immediatly to make the score
5-4 to the Blues. Toman was sent off in the last minute, but the Blues
are planning an appeal.
WHITBY
TOWN 2-1 BISHOP AUCKLAND
22nd August 1998
- Whitby Town made a winning start to their Unibond premier life after
a 2-1 win over old Northern League rivals Bishop Auckland. A super summer
day at the Turnbull dragged a crowd of 791 to the game and they were treated
to early goal from John Borthwick after 8 minutes. A cracking header ended
up in the back of the net after a free kick from the left. The 2nd nearly
came shortly afterwards when the Bishops keeper Bishop made a superb reflex
save from John Francis's shot. Bishops pulled a goal back in the 11th minute
through Bayles after a gallant effort from Kelly in the Blues goal. The
game started to get a bit niggly and the ref ended up showing a few yellows
to the B.A players. The second half saw the Blues dominate, and within
a minute of the restart, we went 2-1 ahead. A corner from the right by
Logan caused chaos in the Bishop goal area. The ball bounced around until
finally Borthwick hooked the ball into the corner of the net, out of the
keeper's reach. Regan and Chillingsworth both had chances at the end but
the game ended satisfactorily enough and Three points are in the bag. COOOME
ONN !!!
