The Blues continued their poor record at Grantham’s South Kesteven Stadium after a Bank Holiday defeat.
Things started badly when Luke Bythway was penalised for a trip in the Blues box, on 15 minutes. However, Shane Bland saved Jordan Hempenstall’s resulting penalty to keep the Seasiders on terms.
Bythway’s centre half partner was Niall McGoldrick, who made a full debut as he replaced Andrew May at the back. At the other end, Matty Tymon saw his header very well stopped by Kieran Preston. Soon after, Andy Monkhouse was given a free header, from James Risborough’s corner, but could only nod wide.
Early in the second half, McGoldrick executed a fine last-ditch tackle to deny Hempenstall, while Michael Hollingsworth dragged a shot wide when well placed. Kieran Weledji replaced Risborough, who had suffered a facial injury and Grantham soon had the lead. The hosts had been in the ascendancy after the break and Luke Shaw slotted home from Danny Meadows’ cross, with 19 minutes remaining.
Mikey Roberts almost immediately came on, for Carson, and fired into the side netting, on 79 minutes. Anthony Hume then came on as one last throw of the dice, for left-back Dan McWilliams. However, Whitby couldn’t hit back and when Meadows fired home, four minutes from time, the end was nigh.
