Report - Whitby Town were unlucky to leave with just a single pont from today's UniBond League encounter with Wakefield Emley. The Blues were without Craig Veart and Scott Nicholson but were able to welcome back Alex Gildea and they also gave a debut to Robert Gill on loan from Scarborough.
Whitby made a comfortable start without threatening the home goal, but on 7 minutes Paul Atkinson had a low drive excellently saved by Paul Cuss in the home goal. The rebound fell to debutant Gill who was also denied by Cuss.
Town didn't threaten again until the 38th minute when good work from Steve Johnson and Anthony Ormerod resulted in the latter having a shot blocked. Two minutes later it was Dave Campbell saving for
Whitby to deny Emley's Jones at his feet. Campbell made two easy saves before Gill headed inches over on the stroke of half time.
Thes econd half saw the home side threaten first with a header with 3 minutes of the half gone.
Some great interplay from Johnson, Nick Scaife and Neil Bishop down the left saw the ball fall to Ormerod who's first time effort was well held by Cuss low to his left. Graham Robinson headed narrowly over Town seconds later.
Whitby were dominating the possesion at the point and Robinson had another effort defelcted wide after good work from Gildea.
Just after the hour mark Whitby had their best chance when Johnson shot 7 yards out only to find Cuss his equal with a super low save again. Emley threatened against the run of play when Kenworthy turned and shot but was denied by Campbell. A minute later the scoreline remained level when Johnson fed Scaife who's shot finally beat Cuss, but sailed millimetres past his right post when it looked certain to go in.
Johnson spooned another effort wide after good work from Gill and Bishop, before Linighan found himself in acres of space bu was penalised by the ref for a foul.
Emley had effort sail wildly over the bar, but with minutes remaining Scaifes 18 yard effort flew inches wide after more good build up play from Robinson.
All in all in an excellent second half from Whitby who will have been disappointed to not leave with all three points.
