Whitby Town striker, Greg Rutherford, praised the overall team ethic and performance in Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Marske United at the Turnbull Ground.
The summer acquisition scored two excellent goals during the match, the second being the pick after beating two defenders and calmly rolling the ball into the bottom corner.
Rutherford, however, was quick to praise his teammates, rather than taking all of the personal glory when talking to Liam Ryder after the match.
“The lads came together as a team very well. The formation worked and everything clicked which we hope will happen at the start of the season.
The lads seem to be ticking well in matches and training. I think that in the second half we were organised whereas in the first half we were letting them play. This changed at half time and everyone did their jobs.”
Something different, but exciting for Blues fans is the new front three being created by Chris Hardy, Rutherford finding himself up front with Matty Tymon and Junior Mondal at the weekend.
“Matty’s touch for the first goal was outstanding which gave me confidence. Junior can open up defences and as a front three that’s what we’ve got to do.”
As the summer signing mentioned, his attacking partners are great to work alongside, but he considers midfielders to be key to his creativity, particularly due to the passing ability of Dale Hopson.
“If you make the runs, Dale will find you. He puts the ball on a plate for you and if we can keep that going this season, we’re going to have a lot of joy.
I feel we’ve got a lot of people who can do damage this season and that’s something we’ve got to utilise.”
