Without using it as an excuse, Chris Hardy has admitted that Thursday night’s excellent 2-2 draw with Warrington Town took energy out of his side in yesterday’s 3-0 defeat to Matlock Town, who were without Thursday night commitments.
“There were a lot of boys running on empty out there, we played on that pitch on Thursday, 48 hours ago. It takes it’s toll, there’s no getting away from that but they haven’t played on Thursday night so they’ve only had travel to compete with.
They hadn’t put the shift in that we did on Thursday where it was hammer and tong for 90 minutes plus. I’m not trying to make excuses but I felt that previous events have taken their toll on us. Take nothing away from Matlock, they passed the ball around well and they fully deserved their three points.”
Hardy did feel however, that particularly in the first half, his Blues side were the creators of their own downfall, a goalkeeping error leading to the first goal for the Gladiators.
“We had a horror show in the first 45. The goal we gave away was poor at best. The way that we couldn’t come to terms with their formation, their progressive football was a concern so we deservedly went in a goal down.
We knew there were improvements to be made in the second half. I thought we played well for the best part of the half, albeit with 20 minutes to play, towards the back end of the half. It was a spirited response but it was too little, too late.”
