Midfielder, Adam Gell was happy to be back involved with a winning Whitby Town side in last night’s victory over Stalybridge Celtic.
Gell admitted personally that he and his teammates let themselves down in Saturday’s FA Cup exit at Whitley Bay but was delighted to give a hand in a hard-fought battle at the Turnbull Ground.
The midfielder, who returned to the club from Shildon this summer, admits that the defeats hurt as a player and that being involved in a winning side is key.
“It was brilliant and that’s what we play for,” said Gell after last night’s match.
“We play football to win games. You can feel a buzz in the changing rooms after the game and after Saturday, we owed the fans and ourselves a performance.
“We let ourselves down on Saturday, so it’s good to be back to winning ways. Junior, as an individual, was brilliant and he showed everyone what he can do tonight.”
The player was also keen to express his praise towards Junior Mondal’s performance. The attacker scored both goals on the night as well as causing several problems for the visitors’ defence.
In yesterday evening’s match, it appeared evident that the main aim was to get to ball to Mondal, as he used his pace and skill to great effect.
“If you get the ball to him, he’l score goals,” Gell said.
“Their defenders were frightened of him and he always played on the last man. He was really good tonight.”
Gell found himself without usual midfield partner Dale Hopson, who was ruled out of the clash with an injury which was bad news for Blues fans.
Jimmy Beadle took his place in the starting eleven and showed why Chris Hardy was keen to bring him back to Whitby from Scarborough Athletic.
“Dale is always going to be a massive miss,” admitted Gell.
“He can play in any position and he’s always going to have an impact on the game. Jimmy came in and he created a good balance in midfield with myself and Jassem Sukar.
“We worked hard together and Jimmy, in particular, was dominant in everything he did so it was good playing with him this evening.”
