Report - from www.whitbytoday.co.uk
TWO last-gasp equalisers at the end of normal time and then extra time set up a dramatic, and at times, unlikely, shoot-out win for Whitby.
Visitors Ossett led three times but left the Turnbull empty-handed after the most agonising shoot-out defeat at the Turnbull on Wednesday night.
Blues boss Lee Nogan admitted his side did not perform too well on the night and were lucky to be in the next round.
He said Ossett were the better side on the night but paid for their missed chances.
"Each time they scored it seemed to wake us up for some reason but we cannot afford to do that.
"It wasn't pretty from our point of view but that's football, we've played a lot better than that and lost."
A scrappy and disjointed first half saw little in the way of quality as Ossett's packed rearguard refused to let the Blues through.
The closest they came was 10 minutes before half-time when an awful hashed clearance from keeper Jon Worsnop saw lively winger Dave McTiernan slip the ball to Tom Raw, who was upended.
Defender Matty Appleby curled his free-kick towards the near post but Worsnop spotted it in good time.
On-loan defender Alex Janes also went close with a skimming drive before the West Yorkshire side took a shock lead five minutes before the interval.
A good through ball was clinically swept home first time by the galloping Rob O'Brien.
Ossett should have doubled their lead early in the second half when Kirk Wheeler's shot was blocked he then fed the unmarked Carl Fothergill who inexplicably blazed over from eight yards.
Whitby finally got their act together on 55 minutes.
Sub Danny Farthing, who had only been on the pitch 10 minutes, thundered home a great header to level the scores.
McTiernan was inches away from a magical goal shortly afterwards. He weaved Ronaldo-style past three defenders and rolled a shot under Worsnop, but wide of the far post.
With their purple patch fading, Whitby were let off the hook as O' Brien sneaked in behind the defence but his air shot brought cheers of derision from the crowd.
With extra-time beckoning, Ossett looked the likelier to pinch a late winner, and that looked to be the case as James Riordan lashed home at the second time of asking.
But with the Blues heading for the exit door, up stepped leading scorer Danny Brunskill to force another 30 minutes.
The visitors again thought they'd wrapped up the tie with a third great strike, this time a shot on the turn from James Walshaw.
But in cup tie fashion, there was more late drama to come as full back Janes lifted the ball over Worsnop with time running out to set up a tense shoot-out.
Everyone apart from Ossett's Ashley Westcarr netted from the spot, leaving Tom Reid the chance to become a hero.
His emphatic effort brought huge cheers from the small but vocal Whitby crowd to cap a great night's entertainment.
