Report - A Danny Farthing own goal settled a Yorkshire Coast derby neither side deserved to win at a sparsely populated McCain Stadium on Saturday.
Scarborough should've tested Blues keeper Dave Campbell early on when an ex-Whitby duo combined- Darren Thornton beating Tom Reid and crossing for Lev Yalcin to nod wide when well placed.
Ironically, Whitby's best chance of the half fell to an ex-Boro player in Ant Ormerod. The former England Youth international ran from deep but with no other options available forced Curtis Aspden to parry at his near post.
The Seasiders made four changes at the break, while the home side introduced prolific pre-season signing Lee Whittington at Yalcin's expense.
And despite not applying the finishing touch himself, the former Rotherham United striker was involved in the winning goal. With Whittington lurking behind him, Farthing needed to connect at the far post with a vicious whipped cross, but only succeeded in slicing past sub keeper Jack Norton.
Jamie Vermiglio hammered a powerful volley just over the Whitby crossbar with Karl Richards' neat 25-yard free-kick well saved by Aspden.
However, in a game of few chances, the Blues should've secured a draw late on when the offside Tom Raw dummied a through ball and Graham Robinson ran from deep but struck a tame effort straight at Aspden when one-on-one with the young goalkeeper.
Whitby were unable to trouble Aspden again, missing striker Danny Brunskill but bemusingly, by-passing the midfield with repeated long balls despite the limited height of Raw and sub Gavin Parkin in the second half forward line.
