Goose's Match Previews - 2011-12 Blues face Olympic challengeBy Andrew SnaithWhitby Town take on newly-promoted Rushall Olympic this Saturday, after three weeks of weather hell have delayed the Blues' comeback hopes. The second-bottom Seasiders are still seven points adrift of safety, with West Midlands mid-tablers Rushall targeted on their first ever visit to the Turnbull Ground. For defender Kevin Burgess it's felt like an eternity on the sidelines, the former Darlington star hasn't kicked a ball since December, due to injury and suspension and the Town talisman admits he's a lousy spectator. "It's frustrating watching from the stand- I can't wait to get back out there.", the centre-half told the Whitby Gazette. "I'm always shouting out at the lads, but it's awful watching- no footballer likes watching." Burgess has put most of his energy over the last ten weeks into preparing for his eventual return, stating: "I've been working very hard in the gym, going on late-night runs, working hard in training and hopefully I'll get my chance and take it. "If he[manager Darren Williams] chooses me to play, I'll do my best as i always do, but if not, I'll back the team as I always do." The Pics will be no pushovers despite being in the midst of their maiden Evo-Stik Premier campaign. The Walsall outfit sit a comfortable eighth, with just one league defeat since the turn of the year. Burgess acknowledges it won't be easy, especially against physical opposition who defeated the Blues 3-2 when the clubs first met in October, However, the versatile fan favourite, who began his career as a striker, remains confident, claiming: "We'll just have to deal with that and hope we come out on top. "Every team in our league's pretty difficult to play against- but there's only been one outstanding team in Chester." The former Middlesbrough junior also believes rivals Mickleover being deducted three points recently will help spur the Blues on, after nearly a month without competitive football: "It just gives us a bit of a lift and more of an incentive to get back out there." He said before adding: "All the lads know that we can do it- they've certainly got the ability. "It's about what we're going to do, not them- if we win more games than them then we'll stay up and I think its something we're well capable of doing." Kick-off at the Turnbull Ground is the usual 3.00pm with admission still just £8 for Adults, £5 Concessions and £2 Under 16s. Last week's waterlogged trip to sixth-placed Bradford Park Avenue has been hastily rearranged for this coming Monday with a 7.45pm kick-off. John Deacey's promotion chasers picked up lively North Ferriby forward Alex Davidson last weekend and the game will see Jimmy Beadle line up against his old club. Beadle(23) re-joined the Blues from the West Yorkshire side in November- it had also been the midfielder's second spell at the Horsfall Stadium and saw him net the two goals that took them through to the First Round Proper of this season's FA Cup. Town will now travel to Matlock Town on Wednesday 18th April, meaning they end the season with back-to-back trips to Derbyshire. Relegation rivals Buxton provide the opposition at their Silverlands home, three days later. Blues' relegation rivals Sport points deductionBy Andrew SnaithFellow strugglers Mickleover Sports are now just four points above Whitby and have played two games more, after having three points docked this week for fielding a suspended player in a match last October. The incident happened against Bradford Park Avenue, who Town meet on Monday- Mickleover went on to win 4-0, but under league rules, clubs playing an ineligible man, lose any points gained from the game or games involved. However, the second-bottom Seasiders remain seven points from safety in the Evo-Stik Premier, with another Derbyshire side, Matlock Town, next up, this Saturday. Mark Atkins' men have won just one of their last 13 games. As well as rubbishing claims he formally applied for the manager's job later taken by ex-Worksop boss Martin McIntosh at neighbours Buxton, Atkins told matlocktownfc.co.uk: "Whitby are struggling near the bottom but they're fighting for their lives which makes them dangerous opponents. "Bearing in mind how we played against Ashton, this time I want us to bounce back positively, seize the initiative and push them back from the start. "The onus is on us to call the tune." The Blues have never beaten the 1975 FA Trophy winners at their Reynolds Stadium home in ten attempts, but did hold the Gladiators 1-1 at the Turnbull Ground back in September. Sam Hodgson headed Whitby into the lead inside four minutes that day, only for Chris Bettney's quickly-taken second-half free-kick to steal a draw for the visitors. Meanwhile, forward Andy Campbell has told of his anguish at facing up to six months on the sidelines and his desire to get into coaching as soon as possible. The former Middlesbrough marksman, who was first told he'd only miss six weeks after going into hospital for knee surgery, revealed: "I had my operation on the 22nd of December and I didn't realise it was going to be as bad as it was, until I woke up and got the bad news from the surgeon that I'm going to struggle to play again this season. "It was wear and tear because of the football I've played over my life." "It's been a long few months and I'm just getting back walking again at the minute." The 32-year-old frontman, perhaps best known for netting Boro's winner in a 2-0 2002 FA Cup Fourth Round win over Manchester United, has been sharing his striking experience with his team-mates, adding: "I want the boys to do the best they can- if I can help in a small way, then that may help certain individuals in a big way. "I speak to some of the individuals on a regular basis- I speak to Kev (Burgess) a lot and I do speak to Daz (Williams). "Matty Tymon was going through a really bad time when I spoke to him, but I've been through those situations and it's nice to help out when I can." Campbell hasn't kicked a ball for the Blues since the FA Cup victory at Parkgate last September, failing to score in ten games before going out on loan to Northern League First Division Norton and Stockton. The Teessider still thinks he has plenty to offer, though, both on and off the field, stating: "I've been there and worn the t-shirt- every centre forward in the world has gone through barren times- you need to come out the other end. "Matty's been working hard, I just told him to keep doing the right things- if he's getting in the team, playing regularly and the lads are winning, then you can't ask any more and the goals will come. "I speak to Jamie(Clarke) and Apps(Andy Appleby) as well- hopefully something will rub off and we'll get the goals we need." After representing England at under-21 level and loan spells at Sheffield United, Bolton Wanderers and Cardiff City, Campbell left Middlesbrough to join the Welsh side permanently, but has been continually hampered by that long-term knee problem, after dropping into non-League with the old Halifax club in 2006. He admits he's been thinking long and hard about going into coaching and it could well be at Whitby Town, if the club are interested: "If I'm not standing on anyone's toes, then I'd like to help out", Campbell told the Whitby Gazette. "I've spoken to Daz- I think to have someone else on the bench gives him the confidence and belief to concentrate on playing. "I want to get into it as soon as I can- if that's next year it's next year. but if it's the year after, I'll do it then. "If someone did come and offer me a job, I'd play when I can, but if the chance arises, I would take it with both hands and give it the best possible shot." One player who is now fit and available is Campbell's friend Kev Burgess- the big centre-half's finally ready for a return after eight weeks on the sidelines. The former Darlington defender has been out since December, through a combination of a three-match suspension and a wrist injury picked up at work. Burgess, who along-with back-four colleague Ibby Hassan, swept the board at last season's club awards, claims: "I'm over the moon to be back." "I've been training really hard for three weeks now, I don't know whether I'm starting, or just in the squad. I'm just itching to be back and out there to do my best, as I always do, to keep Whitby up." Kick-off at Matlock is the usual 3.00pm with admission as follows: Adults £9, Seniors & Juniors £5.50, Children (Under 15) £2 with a paying adult. A supporters coach leaves the Turnbull Ground at 9.30am, with seats still just £10 each. The Blues are again on their travels this Monday night with a Yorkshire derby at Bradford Park Avenue, kick-off 7.45pm- Town are next at home on Saturday week(18th Feb) when Rushall Olympic visit. Whitby Town v FC United of Manchester- Sat 4 Feb 3.00pm- LEAGUE MATCH PreviewTown look for their first-ever win over giants FC United of Manchester this Saturday with defender Ibby Hassan stating it's games like this which show relegation would be a huge blow. The supporters-run club, who played in front of 1,800 people at Bury's Gigg Lane over the weekend, routinely bring several-hundred travelling fans and attracted a four-figure crowd to the Turnbull Ground in October 2008. And with four wins and three draws against the Seasiders, seventh-placed United will provide formidable opposition, but Hassan is looking forward to it. He told the Whitby Gazette: "We're still very confident, despite our last result, as we have turned a corner and we are all pulling in the right direction. "FC are always a good test and it's great to have big crowds at the Turnbull, like the ones they bring with them. "That's why it's so important we stay in this league." Five points seperate second-bottom Whitby from basement-side Burscough, with the Linnets now back playing at their Victoria Park ground, following a nine-month absence. Town lost out 2-1 to Marine last time out, with the postponement of Saturday's scheduled trip to West Lancashire, meaning the Red Rebels visit will be the Blues' fourth successive home clash. Hassan, rejuvenated at right-back under Darren Williams, revealed he was disappointed a frozen pitch put paid to the Burscough shoot-out. "It's a shame we couldn't play Burscough as we were very confident we'd get a result, but we'll approach the FC game with the same attitude.", he said, before adding: "I think it will show just how far the team's come in a few months and we're all up for it." Karl Marginson's men are four points off the play-offs with a game in hand and a superior goal difference to Marine, in fifth. They've five wins from their last seven outings and saw off second-placed Hednesford 2-0 on Saturday, thanks to second-half goals from Matt Wolfenden and Mike Norton. Only leaders Chester can top United's 58 strikes in the Evo-Stik Premier so far this season, with Wolfenden and the division's fourth-top-scorer Norton, netting 24 between them. However, they're no mugs at the other end with three clean sheets in a row- Whitby groundsman Eric Wilson may well need some ice-busting sheets of his own for the Turnbull pitch with temperatures set to hit minus four on Friday night. Another player desperate for Saturday's game to go ahead is centre-half Kev Burgess, who's ready for a return after eight weeks on the sidelines. The former Darlington defender hasn't played since December through a combination of a three-match suspension and a wrist injury picked up at work. Burgess, who along-with Hassan, swept the board at last season's club awards revealed: "I'm over the moon to be back!" "Been training really hard for three weeks now, I don't know whether I'm starting, or just in the squad. I'm just itching to be back and out there to do my best, as I always do, to keep Whitby up." Physio Kenny Bolton confirmed Burgess was available for the Marine game a fortnight ago, he's been busy improving his general fitness since. Supporters are urged to keep in touch via www.whitby-town.com, but if the weather does stay fine, kick-off will be the usual 3.00pm, with admission still just £8 for Adults, £5 Concessions and £2 Under 16s. The Blues can get out of the bottom two for the first time since October if results go their way, after third-bottom Buxton lost 3-1 at Rushall Olympic. Town face back-to-back away trips within two days next week when they travel to Derbyshire outfit Matlock Town a week on Saturday(11th) and visit United's play-off rivals, sixth-placed Bradford Park Avenue, the following Monday evening. Blues in relegation D-day By Andrew Snaith Whitby battle bottom-club Burscough on Saturday, in the very epitome of the term 'six-pointer'. There may be a debut for striker Nathan Mulligan (25) who signed from Northern League First Division Norton & Stockton Ancients. The former Darlington frontman, who started out as a Middlesbrough junior, has 12 goals so far this season. Mulligan says he's the "exact opposite of that big target man" and can also play on either wing or "in the hole" behind the forwards. He added: "I think my best attributes are my speed and being clever on the ball. On the Blues, he revealed: "I've always followed them because they're a big team. "I've got six or seven friends there- Jamie Clarke was at Norton with me last season. "I was always involved with the results and now, as a player, I can be involved with the result in a different way and try and improve them, which i totally think that I can and we can definitely definitely stay up this year, one hundred percent." Another upbeat player is last weekend's man of the match centre-half Alex White, who's recently moved across from left-back under Darren Williams and enjoys playing alongside ex-Blyth team-mate Andy Leeson. White told the Whitby Gazette: "It's been good, it's a change- I was a bit rusty when I first went into centre-back- the last time I'd played there was about 40 games ago, but it's a good change and I enjoy it." "Obviously Leeson has got a lot of experience and he's good to play alongside- he's great in the air, so it's great to play alongside him." Two mistakes at the back cost the Seasiders against Marine last time around, but like Williams, White doesn't feel goalkeeper Nick Liversedge deserves the blame. He lamented: "It's one of those things in football- the weather played a part with the second one, but the first one was just very unlucky- you can't really do anything about that. "He's a good keeper- he knows himself that he's a good keeper- he's been doing well recently and it's one of those things in football that you can’t help." The 23-year-old is under no illusions of how important Saturday's trip to West Lancashire is, but retains full confidence in himself and his team-mates. "It's probably one of the biggest games of the season up-to now, but I don’t think there's anyone in this league that we should fear. "There's been a few fresh faces at the club with Jimmy (Beadle) coming back and players like Jeff Smith coming into the team- it all helps to give you a boost. "Appo(Matty Appleby) and Clarkey- players like that have come in and done well- it's good to play in the same team as them." Physio Kenny Bolton has been treating boss Williams for a hamstring injury- which may keep him out of the trip- and Clarke will have a late fitness test on a dead leg. Meanwhile, winger Billy Blackford has joined Guisborough Town, with his manager at pains to confirm the measure was just for the former Hartlepool youngster "to get some games under his belt". Bolton also confirmed defender Kev Burgess is back training after a wrist strain and may come into contention, for the first time in eight weeks. History suggests it’ll be an uphill battle with just four Whitby wins in 19 clashes between the sides, since 1981. Five points separate the clubs with the Linnets holding a game in hand, but with Town just two points adrift of third-bottom Buxton, a win could take them out of the bottom-two for the first time since October. White thinks the Blues' travelling support at Skelmersdale- who host Burscough's home games- could be the difference and says the spirit remains strong in the dressing room, stating: "It's great that we get support like we do off the fans- they always get behind us and that's a fact. "The lads are all confident in training- the way we pass the ball and the way we play. "The crack with the lads is absolutely brilliant- it's good to get that back, because at times, it wasn’t there.” Kick-off at Skelmersdale on Saturday is 3.00pm, with admission at the West Lancashire College Stadium £8 and £4. A supporters coach leaves the Turnbull Ground at 9am. Ex-Blue Claisse: "I'd love to come back"By Andrew SnaithFormer Whitby Town midfielder Tom Claisse(24) has admitted this week he wants a third spell at the club he rates as the best he's ever played for. Now serving in the RAF, as an air-traffic controller, Claisse(24) was originally signed in April 2006 by then-manager Dave Logan, on his release from Bradford City. 12 months later, he'd made 36 appearances, scoring twice, before being discarded by player-boss Lee Nogan, only to be recalled by Nogan's successor Graeme Clark within two months and finished the 2007/08 season with double the goal tally and 34 more games under his belt. Claisse left for a second time in summer 2008 and told the Whitby Gazette: "I went to Bradford Park Avenue and Farsley Celtic in the Conference North and now I've decided to go down a different career route, I'm now in the RAF and I'm absolutely loving it. "All being well, next month I'm flying to Cyprus for a week playing football." Claisse, soon to be stationed at Linton On Ouse, near York, is hoping to help the Air Force to a fifth successive inter-service tournament against the Army and Navy and isn't the only ex-pro in the RAF ranks. "Lee Crooks, who played at Manchester City plays- I used to clean his boots at Bradford City and a lot of the lads play Conference South and Southern League. "I was suprised by how good the standard was." However, Claisse, who's also turned out at Portsmouth's Fratton Park and Shrewsbury's New Meadow Stadium in forces games, has kept an eye on Town's progress ever since departing. When asked if he'd fancy another go, the fan-favourite, who's even turned out for Whitby's Supporters' team, stated: "It'd be nice, it'd be really nice- the god's honest truth is that I'd really love to come back. "I'm not saying I could make a difference, but I want to try to make the difference, to try and stay in this league, because Whitby's probably been the best club I've been to, overall. "How nice the fans are, how the nice the people are, the chairman, everyone about the club- it's just an amazing club." Beadle: "It's going to be a scrap, it's going to be messy, it's going to be difficult"By Andrew SnaithAfter an unbeaten start to the new year, a win over fifth-placed Marine on Saturday gives Whitby a chance to get out of the Evo-Stik Premier's bottom two, for the first time since October, but joint top scorer Jimmy Beadle thinks the Merseysiders will be up for a fight. "They're scousers, they never back down- it's going to be a good game, it's going to be a scrap and it'll be messy and it'll be difficult- but as long as we give it our all, that's all that matters really.", states the popular midfielder with six goals from nine games so far. He added: "I know they had an excellent start to the season and their away form is second to none." However, the 23-year-old former York City schemer has revealed things are getting better off the field for the Blues with boss Darren Williams allowing players more freedom to put ideas forward in the dressing room: "Daz has created an atmosphere where everyone's on an even keel. "It's not like a hierarchy or a dictatorship, it's democratic- you have your opinion and they respect it. "You have four, five, six players having input during games, at half-time, before games and everyone's pulling in the same direction." Town are unbeaten in 2012 and have conceded just two goals from their last three matches, despite the absence of highly-rated centre-half Kev Burgess with a wrist strain. Physio Kenny Bolton is hoping the ex-Darlington defender will be back next month, but revealed striker Jordan Hugill will also miss out for the Seasiders' third straight home clash. The youngster's recovery from a knee injury, sustained fifteen minutes into his first start for the Blues, has had to be put on hold pending further medical checks. Despite their lofty position, the visitors- from Crosby, near Liverpool- are still without a victory in the new year after three winless outings, including a 1-0 home defeat to Stafford Rangers, last weekend. Beadle is hoping Williams' new-found dressing room unity will pay off, claiming: "You've got Andy Campbell, who's got a lot of knowledge in the game who speaks, Dave Campbell as well and some of the players too. "Everyone can voice an opinion- Darren will acknowledge it- he might say 'I agree with what you're saying', but he's strong in his opinion and he's in charge. "Every player in the changing room has respect for him- he's played 200 games for Sunderland and it's a privilege to play alongside players like that." With just three defeats in their last 17 meetings with the Mariners, history may also be on Whitby's side. To find out, kick-off is 3.00pm at the Turnbull Ground on Saturday with admission still just £8 for Adults, £5 Concessions and £2 Under 16s. The following weekend sees the Seasiders visit another North West outfit in bottom club Burscough, who play their home games at nearby Skelmersdale. Williams hoping fans can take a MintBy Andrew SnaithBlues player-manager Darren Williams has asked Blues fans to back the club when they face the second of three successive Saturday home games, against Kendal Town this weekend. The Seasiders are now just seven points from safety, with two games in hand on key relegation rivals after back to back wins against Frickley and Chasetown to kick off 2012. Williams told the Whitby Gazette: "I understand the crowds being low- it's been a very disappointing first half of the season, but I would stress to the fans that the second half of the season wont be disappointing, by no means. "We've got a lot more about us now, we're looking a better side and i think it'll be a good, entertaining game on Saturday." Kendal enjoyed a 5-3 victory last Saturday at Worksop Town, with frontman Gary McEvatt grabbing a hat-trick as Lee Ashcroft's men recovered from two goals down and their 4-3 loss, seven days earlier, to basement side Burscough, following a 95th minute own goal. The Black and Whites also enjoyed a penalty shoot-out success over First Division North neighbours Lancaster City on Tuesday night, despite throwing away a two-goal lead of their own to finish all square at 3-3 after 90 minutes. The victory takes the Lake District outfit to the Fifth Round stage of the Doodson Sport League Cup and Williams certainly isn't taking the Cumbrians lightly after their 2-1 win over Whitby in August. The Blues boss admitted: "Kendal are a good side- we know that- we've obviously previously played them. "But at this point in the season, I believe we are a completely different side to what we were when we played them down in Kendal." "We're getting a lot of confidence about ourselves after back to back wins and we're looking to maintain that, for as long as possible.". In just the fourth game of the season, the North West club netted a Tom Kilifin winner, nine minutes from time, despite skipper Mark Robinson putting the travelling Blues ahead in the first half. Kendal currently sit twelth in the Evo-Stik Premier and only two teams in the division have scored more than their 49 league goals, so far this campaign- top marksman Mark Jackson hitting ten of those. However, all is not well at the Lakeside Radio Stadium and this week the club released a statement on official website www.kendaltown.com admitting they'd asked manager Ashcroft to reduce his playing budget, due to a lack of income from their clubhouse. This follows the news that fifth-bottom Frickley Athletic have also had to slash their spending on player wages after a general drop in funds. Victory for the Blues and defeat for Buxton, could take them above the Bucks on goal difference and out of the bottom two, for the first time since October. Physio Kenny Bolton this week confirmed midfielder Dave McTiernan is available for selection after overcoming a long-term groin and back problem. Winger Billy Blackford and manager Williams are expected to shake off hamstring strains, while Andy Appleby, who netted the second goal in last week's 2-0 win over Chasetown, is also expected to play, despite a shin complaint. However, Glenn Hoddle Academy striker Jordan Hugill is again doubtful after a knock to the knee sustained last month, just fifteen minutes into his first start for the club. Highly-rated defender Kev Burgess remains sidelined with a wrist injury and forward Andy Campbell is just hoping to play before the end of the season after major surgery on his knee. Kick-off at the Turnbull Ground on Saturday is 3.00pm with admission still only £8 for Adults, £5 concessions and £2 Under 16s. Whitby complete their series of three next Saturday when fifth-placed promotion-chasers Marine are in town- Blues will be hoping to continue a great record against the Merseyside outfit, after losing just three times in 17 clashes, since 2004. The Crosby club drew 1-1 at fourth-bottom Stocksbridge at the weekend and lost 4-2 to fellow highflyers Chorley over New Year, after going into the game with five wins from their previous six. Whitby Town v North Ferriby United- Boxing Day Mon 3pmWhitby Town player-manager Darren Williams is hoping the errors he's spotted on DVD this week will help the Blues tighten up at the back on Boxing Day.The Seasiders face old FA Vase adversaries North Ferriby United on the back of conceding nine goals in two games, which leaves them searching for that elusive first home league win of the season. The former Sunderland star viewed last weekend's 4-3 reverse to relegation rivals Buxton for a second time, then went back to the shock 5-4 loss against Nantwich Town, in which Town threw away a 3-0 lead. He told the Whitby Gazette: "I've picked up on a few points that are very very vital to us and we'll be working on this week. "I've told the lads whether training's going to be boring is irrelevant- I've highlighted areas that we need to work on and if we can't bring people in then we'll work on those points, so they're strengthened up until we're not conceding as many goals as we are. "The good thing about having DVDs is that people can't hide- when you're in normal play, it's difficult to pin down and highlight things straight away, but there are points I have spoken to the lads about in training." The 34-year-old boss, who'll again be without suspended centre-half Kev Burgess on Monday, admitted he'd made an approach for a defender this past week but missed out, adding: "We caught it at the back end of him already agreeing to go somewhere else, which was unfortunate. "We're always on the look out- looking at our past games, it's something we need to strengthen up- whether that's bringing someone in or focusing on a lot of work, then we're going to have to do that. "We've got a lot of big games and North Ferriby is one of them- obviously we're looking to kick-start our festive period." Williams may well start himself in midfield after revealing it was something being considered by himself and assistants Dave Campbell and Dennis Wheeler, against a side Town meet for the third time since October. Blues knocked Ferriby, now managed by ex-Frickley and Bridlington Town chief Billy Heath, out of the FA Cup at the Second Qualifying Round stage, after goals from on-loan Callum Hassan and local lad Jake Faichney secured a 2-1 victory. It's Whitby's only success at the Turnbull Ground this season and the East Yorkshire outfit took a measure of revenge less than six weeks later by sneaking a 1-0 win at their Church Road home, in the Doodson Sport League Cup. Only Mickleover's Alex Steadman has scored more goals than Ferriby talisman Gary Bradshaw in the Evo-Stik Premier. The former Cheltenham marksman, who celebrated his 200th strike for the in-form village team earlier this season, has netted on 12 occasions so far, but missed a penalty in their autumn cup exit. However in the league, second-bottom Town are eight points adrift of safety and Chairman Graham Manser has asked locals to turn out in numbers ahead of the club's first Boxing day clash in three years. In 2009, over a month without football hit the club hard following snow storms, with last season seeing nearly three weeks lost. Mr Manser said: "The club appreciates that we are in deep relegation trouble, but the new management team have brought in new players and all the players, management and committee are totally committed to staying up. "We would like to appeal to the town to support us in force on Boxing Day, to help us get our first home victory and help us push on to save ourselves." As well as Burgess, the Blues will again be without long-term casualties Dave McTiernan and Andy Campbell, but goalkeeper Nick Liversedge is expected to return and three-in-two striker Jamie Clarke should shrug off a painful arm injury, after bending his elbow the wrong way during Saturday's defeat. Mr Manser has also thanked fundraising supporter Andy Lever, who's walking some 15 miles from his home in Loftus to the game, adding: "It's a very good effort- we're all behind him- I hope he makes it in time for kick off, so he can lead the team out." Sponsor forms are available in the Clubhouse and Club Shop at Whitby Town Football Club. Kick-off at the Turnbull Ground is the usual 3.00pm, with admission still just £8 for Adults, £5 Concessions and £2 Under 16s. Fixtures are still being rearranged and January is now as follows for the Blues: Mon 2- Frickley Athletic (away), Sat 7- Chasetown (home), Sat 14- Kendal Town (home), Sat 21- Marine (home), Sat 28- Burscough (away). The Bradford Park Avenue away tie, originally re-scheduled for Monday 30th January, is now set for Monday 13th February. There is a dominoes drive at the Clubhouse tonight (Fri 23) at 8pm. Last home game before Christmas promises to be crackerBy Andrew SnaithWhitby Town take on fellow strugglers Buxton this Saturday, with just four points seperating the two sides, as they battle to remain in the Evo-Stik Northern Premier. Darren Williams' men are still without a home league win after throwing away a 3-0 lead against Nantwich at the Turnbull, nearly two weeks ago. The former Sunderland star says steps have been taken to prevent that happening again: "We haven't dwelled on it, but we have touched base and we have gone through things that went on throughout the game, particularly, second half. "If we're in a similar situation, I think you'll see a completely different attitude and if that attitude's not how we want it to be, obviously things will be changed. "We cant reflect too much on the negatives, we've had negatives all season- my thoughts and David Campbell's thoughts are to concentrate on the positives and keep the lads up. "I dont think I'd have done things differently- it was the same team that went out first half and absolutely annihilated Nantwich." The Blues were frustrated last weekend when the scheduled trip to basement club Burscough was called off due to a waterlogged pitch- Williams added: "I got the lads in Saturday and we had a training session- albeit indoors- but it was good to keep the lads together and keep the morale going. "We were disappointed the game was off Saturday. "We had it in our minds that we wanted to make amends for the week before." The Seasiders will be without highly-rated centre-half Kev Burgess who starts a two-match suspension, with Ibby Hassan set to replace him in a straight swap. Williams sees it as a chance for 23-year-old Hassan to get back into form: "It's a big blow for us- Kevin's been one of the most consistent players and he will be missed. "You can look at other formats and other scenarios, but we don't want to complicate it too much. "It gives Ibby an opportunity to get in there, get the shirt and hopefully, hold on to it." The Bucks parted company with long-serving manager John Reed by mutual consent last month, despite him taking the Derbyshire outfit to the Evo-Stik Premier Play-off Final in 2007 and top-eight finishes in the past two seasons. Former Hull City and Doncaster Rovers midfielder Scott Maxfield has since taken over but the Peak District side remain third from bottom. If results go Town's way they can go within four points of safety and Williams is in no doubt as to the game's importance, claiming: "It's massive- if we go into Saturday positive, if we come away with three points, then it takes us within a point of Buxton. "If we beat Buxton it puts pressure on them- they're looking over their shoulder and it gives us that momentum to go forward again. "We know where we can get to and we know what our capabilities are." Kick-off in Town's last game before Christmas is 3.00pm with admission still just £8 for adults, £5 concessions and £2 under 16s. The Burscough fixture will now take place on Saturday January 28th, with the Kendal Town home tie originally set for that date, now pencilled in for Saturday January 14th. Whitby Town v Nantwich Town- Sat 1 Dec 3.00pm- LEAGUE MATCH PreviewWhitby Town manager Darren Williams believes the club's mini unbeaten run will prove a turning point in their season, with a huge month of games ahead. The Blues' win at Ashton United on Wednesday closed the gap between them and safety to seven points, helped by fifth-bottom Mickleover's last-gasp 5-4 defeat at Worksop Town, the same night. He told the Whitby Gazette: "It's an important December for us- we've got some big games coming up against teams which are around about us- obviously Nantwich are a little bit further up the table from us, but nothing to be feared really." The Dabbers sit eleventh and Town have unfinished business with Jimmy Quinn's men after a 2-0 September defeat in Cheshire. Ben Mills struck trhe winner that day and the Nantwich frontman is one to watch in the Evo-Stik Premier with ten goals so far this season. Williams also grabbed the opportunity to get some advice from Wednesday's defeated opponents. He revealed: "I've spoken to a couple of Ashton players after the match- they've played them previously and I got a little bit of insight on them. "We're looking forward to Saturday, we're looking to go in there full of confidence and come away with something." The Seasiders will have to improve on a grim past record against their weekend visitors, with last season's 3-1 success their only victory in seven meetings. Quinn(52), who reached the FA Cup semi-finals as a player with West Ham United, managed Nantwich, where he started his career, to the First Round proper this season for the first time in their 127-year history. They succumbed 6-0 at League One MK Dons last month, in front of a 4,000+ crowd and have suffered a further four winless games since, including a 4-1 thumping at Kendal Town and a shock 2-1 defeat at bottom-club Burscough. Kick-off on Saturday at the Turnbull Ground is the usual 3.00pm, with admission still just £8.00 for Adults, £5.00 Concessions and £2.00 Under 16s. Blues fans are reminded that this is the penultimate game before Christmas Day, with the Club Shop open for present hunting- Town host third-bottom Buxton on Saturday 17th December. Ashton United v Whitby Town- Weds 30 NovBottom-of-the-table Blues will be hoping to end a run of 13 winless league games on Wednesday night when they visit Greater Manchester outfit Ashton United.Town are unbeaten in their last five meetings with Danny Johnson's side, enjoying a double over them last season. Most recently, a controversial injury-time penalty saw the Evo-Stik Northern Premier's 17th-placed club earn a 2-2 draw at the Turnbull Ground, with then-boss Tommy Cassidy sent to the stands for his protests. Current manager Darren Williams knows the game marks the start of an eight-match-run against teams in the bottom half of the NPL, he told the Whitby Gazette: "The back end of November and all of December is a big month for us, a massive month for us. "The lads know what's in store- we know about teams, we're working hard. "Everyone's sticking together and we've got the right attitude." Ashton's 2-0 victory over Frickley Athletic on Saturday, thanks to a Sam Madeley brace, was their first NPL win since September and completed a double over the West Yorkshiremen. Town are still rock bottom despite arresting their nine-game losing streak with back-to-back draws this past week, they're effectively eleven points adrift of safety due to a goal difference fifteen worse than fifth-bottom Mickleover. But Williams, who's brought in winger Jeff Smith(31), midfielders Tom Portas(19) and Jimmy Beadle(23), plus forwards Jamie Clarke(38) and Andy Appleby(26) since taking over five weeks ago, remains confident of bridging the gap. "We're getting the right lads in now- when you take over from a manager who's brought his players in, you then need to bring your own players in and part-way through the season, it's very difficult. "But we're getting there, we're doing the job and we're two unbeaten now." Williams will again be without striker Andy Campbell, but a positive scan result on his knee injury means the ex-Middlesbrough striker should be back by the new year. Midfielder Dave McTiernan is also likely to miss out with those recent signings meaning he can finally have extensive treatment on a long-running groin and hamstring injury. Town's player-boss is certainly unfazed and appears to have done his homework on the Blues' forthcoming opponents, he declared: "We know what's in store for us and we know what job we've got to do. "We'll go out there and do it and I believe we'll be all right." A supporters coach leaves the Turnbull Ground at 3.30pm bound for Greater Manchester, with a 7.45pm kick-off. Seats remain just £10 each and admission to Ashton's Hurst Cross home is £8 for Adults and £5 concessions, with one child under 15 admitted free when accompanied by a paying adult. The Blues are back at home on Saturday when Jimmy Quinn's Nantwich Town visit the Turnbull. Blues face biggest game of the seasonBy Andrew SnaithSecond-bottom Whitby Town take on the side one place and five points ahead of them this Wednesday, in Yorkshire rivals Stocksbridge Park Steels. Like the Blues, Steels' boss Gary Marrow resigned recently with new-manager Darren Schofield steering the South Yorkshire srrugglers to their first league win in five at the weekend. Steels beat Rushall Olympic 2-0 on Saturday with Richard Stirrup and Jack Muldoon on target towards the end of each half. The Seasiders still await their first home victory in the league this season, but player-boss Darren Williams will be going all out for all three points after a defensive line-up at leaders Northwich on Saturday: "I think we'll be looking more attacking-minded on Wednesday night- it's a big game for both teams, really." Williams, is cautious about the chances of starting fit-again winger Billy Blackford, claiming: "I don't know whether it'll be early days for his fitness or not." The Blues' supremo has presided over five successive defeats, with the club picking up a 55-year-record ninth in a row at Northwich, he was the master of under-statement regarding the midweek must-win, adding: "We've played them previously, so we've a fair idea how they play and how they're set up, so I'm sure it'll be an interesting game." Earlier this season, Town picked up their only victory in the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League so far- a 2-0 win at Stocksbridge's Look Local Stadium. Goals from Matty Tymon and Dave McTiernan settled the tie that day and the Blues will be desperate to pick up a double and cut the 10-point gap between themselves and fifth-bottom Ashton United, on the other side of the relegation zone. Whitby have certainly had the better of meetings between the two teams over the years, with eight wins, one draw and three defeats since they first locked horns in January 1998. Town were also victorious in the corresponding clash last season when McTiernan and Ash Davis netted in another 2-0 success. The Blues are likely to give home debuts to striker Jamie Clarke(38), acquired last week from Northern League First Division Ashington, where he netted 11 goals in 11 games and 19-year-old ex-Guisborough Town defensive-midfielder Tom Portas, signed from Newton Aycliffe, the day before. Town will again be without forward Andy Campbell, who could be out until the spring, but should welcome teenager Lewis Hawkins back to the centre of the park, after the Hartlepool United loanee was rested at the weekend. Kick-off at the Turnbull Ground is 7.45pm with admission still just £8 for adults, £5 concessions and £2 under 16s. The Seasiders are on their travels again this Saturday, at fourth-placed Chorley. Blues at Mickleover previewby Andrew SnaithBlues have an early-season six-pointer on Saturday when they visit Derbyshire outfit Mickleover Sports. Promoted from what's now the Evo-Stik First Division South in 2010, Sports were beaten twice last season by the Seasiders and drew 1-1 at the Turnbull Ground in August when Billy Blackford scored. Blackford will miss out with a collar bone injury at the weekend, but is set to travel with the team and returns to training on Monday. Player-manager Darren Williams knows just how important the clash could be to the second-bottom Blues, who trail Sports by seven points and two places, with a game in hand. He told the Whitby Gazette: "It's important that there's not a great gap created between us and getting out of the situation we're in. "Three points would be vital for us and we're going in with the right frame of mind, we discussed different points in the game at training. "We're going to go there and play with freedom, like we did in the first half last Saturday- the lads played some great stuff and I think we've just got to maintain that throughout the 90 minutes." Williams and assistant Dave Campbell have been busy working on bringing in new additions this week and one of those in contention for Saturday will be popular defender Ashley Lyth. The local lad- a former Leicester City full-back- left the club seven weeks ago after a dispute with former boss Tommy Cassidy- Williams was pleased to see the 28-year-old back, however and hopes there'll be others following soon. "It was good to see him back, it was disappointing when he had to leave before, but he came back for training and I'm probably looking to include him in the squad for Saturday. "Fingers crossed we're hoping to get one or two in- if not, we've a squad ready for Saturday anyway. "A couple of the lads were involved in important games at the weekend and we didn't want to disrupt anything with any club or player, by taking their minds off the games they had, so we waited until Monday morning." As a result, the club may be frustrated by the seven-day ruling which requires clubs to give seven day's notice when signing players, though this can be waived by the selling team. Former Sunderland star Williams was appointed alongside Campbell and the experienced Dennis Wheeler to keep the squad united at a testing time, but the 34-year-old isn't afraid to bring in newcomers across the team, if necessary. He stated: "We need to score goals, we need more creativity coming forward, possibly down the left-hand side. "We've got the likes of Dave McTiernan and Lewis(Hawkins) on loan from Hartlepool in the centre of midfield, however they're both very similar players, so maybe, (we'd be better) having a midfielder who can sit in there, get hold of the ball and try and build up play from there. "I think they're important positions at the moment- we know not to take away from the fact that we have conceded goals as well, so there is something in mind of keeping as many clean sheets as possible, but also the main importance is getting goals. Dick Pratley's men threw away a 3-1 lead to lose 4-3, after conceding three second-half goals to title-chasing Chorley on Saturday, while in the West Midlands, Town went down 3-1 at high-flying Hednesford, which completed a 12-month unbeaten run in home league games. It was Williams' first match in charge of the Blues and he insists every game is a learning curve. He revealed: "We try and take something from every game, regardless of performance. "You do learn a lot- that's why I took the option not to be involved, myself, in the starting eleven- to take the opportunity to see the lads from the sideline, take in what people are doing and see what needs changing, really." Kick-off at the Mickleover Sports Club is the usual 3.00pm, with a supporters coach leaving the Turnbull Ground at 9.30am and seats still just £10 each. Admission is Adults £9, Concessions £5 and Under 16's £1. Blues are away again on Tuesday night at North Ferriby United in the Dootson Sports League Cup Third Round with a 7.45pm kick-off- their next home game is a first-ever meeting with Chester FC, the following Saturday (12th November). Hednesford Town v Whitby Town- Sat Oct 26 3.00pm- LEAGUE MATCH PreviewBlues begin a new era on Saturday when player-manager Darren Williams takes charge for the first time, at fourth-placed Hednesford Town.Williams(34), who made over 100 appearances in the Premiership for Sunderland, was appointed on Wednesday afternoon, finding out just a couple of hours before Town followers right here at www.whitby-town.com. Our new boss told the Whitby Gazette: "It is something I was looking to get into- I've done coaching in and around the area- Darlington, Middlesbrough etc. "And knowing the lads at Whitby, I feel theres a possibility for me there and an opportunity to further my career in a different aspect. "I do have some useful contacts here and there- I was at Sunderland for a long time, I played at Hartlepool as well and I have good friends at Darlington." Chairman Graham Manser attended the team's regular training session, addressing players and staff before an emergency board meeting later in the week confirmed an internal appointment. In a statement issued just after 4.30pm on Wednesday, Mr Manser said: 'On Monday evening, a meeting was held with the players and a full and frank discussion took place regarding the poor results this season. The players were confident that results can be turned around with everybody giving 100% and pulling together. 'As a consequence of the team bonding together and not wanting to alienate them by bringing in an outsider, the club have decided to promote from within, making Darren Williams player-manager, with David Campbell as player-coach- both being guided by the experience of Dennis Wheeler.' Campbell(41) is the club's popular second-highest appearance-maker, while Wheeler has been goalkeeping coach since January 1996, after an 84-game playing career with the Blues during the 70s and managed his native Guisborough Town to the FA Vase Final in 1980. Club captain Mark Robinson says the players are excited about the changes, calling them "absolutely tremendous for the club". He continued: "Every single one of the lads was in favour of the appointment. It was like a new team, it felt like the season starting again, everyone felt fresh and I think it's what was needed. "You'll see a completely new attitude from the players and we just can't wait to get started- we wanted a midweek game- but we're just chomping at the bit for Saturday." Williams, who'll be attending a thorough coaching course in the summer, also revealed he's still thinking over how the new set-up will work: "I think, ideally, I'd like to spend a bit of time on the sideline and be able to see things from that point of view, rather than being on the field, because sometimes it can take away from your personal game itself, having to try and manage it on the pitch. "However, this weekend, I'm not 100 percent sure how we're going to do it- we may both need to be on the field, then obviously dennis will be in the dugout. "As of next week, when things have hopefully settled down, we can get sorted and I may need to take more of a step back and be more of a manager." The Seasiders' recent results at Hednesford have been encouraging with back-to-back wins including an FA Trophy triumph under Bob Scaife last season. However, this season, the Blues have just one league win from 14 outings and find themselves third from bottom, and exited the FA Trophy on Saturday at Woodley Sports from the league below, hastening Cassidy's departure. The Pitmen, in contrast, are unbeaten at home with just two league defeats all season and trail leaders Northwich Victoria by nine points, with two games in hand. Williams is under no illusion about the size of the task ahead- he also wants new additions soon: "After Saturday, I think we've got to sit down- myself, David Campbell, the chairman and Dennis- and have a look at things, see where we can go and see what's available out there, because it is apparent that we do need to bring some players in." "We've got three difficult games coming up in the next few weeks, against really good opposition, but I do feel we can turn things around, given time. "We've 28 games left, the main priority is to stay in the league- I have ambitions to go further than that, so obviously, I want to do well and continue doing the job next season, but results are key." A supporters coach leaves the Turnbull Ground at 8.30am with seats just £10. Admission at Keys Park for the 3.00pm kick-off is £10/£9 for adults, £6/£5 concessions, with an adult and an Under 16 £10, adult and 2 U16s £12 and a family ticket (2 adults and 2 U16s costing £18. Assistant-less Cassidy believes Blues have Sport-ing chance on 3GBy Andrew SnaithWhitby Town look to end a run of three successive defeats when they visit Woodley Sports and their 3G pitch in the FA Trophy's First Qualifying Round, this Saturday. The national competition for sides within the top four levels of non-League has thrown up a chance to exorcise the ghosts of 2006. Lee Nogan's Whitby lost 3-2 in the Trophy at the Evo Stik First Division North outfit, but current manager Tommy Cassidy hopes his team will be better prepared. The Blues' boss told the Whitby Gazette that there's nothing to fear from a plastic pitch: "I've been down there twice and they play on it, obviously, every week and it'll suit them. "The ball goes quicker, it bounces a lot and it does take a while to get used to it, but, as I told the players, we play on 3G pitches Wednesday nights and Monday nights so we're not strangers to it. "We train on one at King's Academy and at Acklam." The former Newcastle United and Burnley midfielder also has playing experience on artificial surfaces, he revealed: "I was lucky or unlucky enough many many many years ago to play at the QPR pitch in London. "The goalkeeper was kicking it and the ball was landing on the halfway line, then bouncing over the other team's bar! "I've played on one or two abroad, I'm not a big fan, but it's a lot different now." Sports lie fifth in the division below the Evo-Stik Premier, having recently brought in management-pairing Matt Broadhead and the experienced former Leek boss Paul Ogden. The Stockport-side have suffered one home league defeat all season and conceded just eight times in 11 outings, making them the meanest defence in the First Division North. Cassidy certainly won't be taking them for granted, stating: "I think they beat Skelmersdale in the last round and Skelmersdale are in the top two of their league, so it'll be very difficult. "Just because they're a league below us, doesnt mean anything. "We showed on Saturday, Blyth are in the league above us and we could have beaten them, with a bit of luck." Cassidy has also outlined what he's looking for in an assistant after losing the services of Tony Elliott, who's returned to the number two role at former club Workington Reds, he says "one or two have come into the frame", but added: "I'm looking for someone strong who can argue against me, as well as for me- I don't want a yes man, I don't want a rebel. "Tony had a great input, I'm very disappoined he's left, but he has his own reasons for leaving the club. "I've got to see who's available, meet them, talk to them, see what their ideas are- obviously, I want to know them, but if I don't know them, that doesn't rule anyone out." The former Gateshead supremo, who celebrates a year in charge of the Blues next Thursday, also revealed after Saturday's FA Cup exit, that he's chasing at least two forward players, with no deal done as yet. "It's quietened a little bit, there's a money issue coming into it, which doesn't help, but there's nothing definite yet. "In an ideal world, I'd like to bring three players in. "It's doubtful for Saturday, but I'm hoping to get someone in the next week." Despite that setback and admitting to fans that Town's losing run and league position is "embarassing", Cassidy says he still believes in his team: "After watching the players train, there's a good spirit there. "We're expecting a tough game and we know that if we can go there and get something, it'll be a massive bonus." Kick-off at the Neil Rourke Stadium is 3.00pm, with a supporters coach leaving the Turnbull Ground at 9.30am Saturday- seats are just £10 each. Whitby Town v Blyth Spartans- Sat 15 Oct 3.00pm- FA CUP 3Q PreviewBy Andrew SnaithThe magic of the FA Cup returns to the Turnbull Ground on Saturday. It's the penultimate qualifying round and old rivals Blyth Spartans are in town, hoping to take the £7,500 prize money and go one win away from the First Round Proper. It's just over 47 years since Jimmy Mulvaney netted twice in a 3-2 Halloween success for the Blues on the two clubs' first ever meeting. Since then, the Seasiders have won another 38 times, including a seven-year run of just two losses in 17 games. Town lead 39-37 overall, but Steve Cuggy's Spartans are a division ahead of their North Yorkshire rivals these days, plying their trade in the Blue Square North, but like Whitby, find themselves third from bottom. However, Bradford City defender Adam Robinson and Harrogate Town midfielder Michael Tait have arrived at Croft Park on month-long deals this week to help out the injury-hit Northumberland outfit, who despatched Northern League neighbours Bedlington Terriers in the last round. The Blues have just one win at home this season, which came against North Ferriby United to set up this tie, while Blyth have yet to triumph on their travels. Whitby manager Tommy Cassidy thinks his side has a chance, but only with a big improvement at the back after shipping ten goals in three games. He told the Whitby Gazette: "If we can cut out the individual mistakes, silly silly defensive errors this season, we'll be a better team. "We want to go out Saturday and show what we did second half(against Worksop in midweek), when we matched them for desire and hunger. "If we can do that against Blyth Spartans then yes weve got a chance, if we go out like we did first half, defend badly, not work hard enough, not close down, not doing the things you should do in football, then we'll get beaten." The former Gateshead boss, who should have a full squad to choose from, with Sam Hodgson(calf), Dave McTiernan(groin) and Kev Burgess(back) expected to shake off minor injuries, was furious after Wednesday's 4-3 defeat. "I'll defend the players in many ways, but they need to stand up and be counted and some don't do that. "Some of the performances have been suicidal, with junior mistakes, not picking up, not marking properly, not concentrating and paying the penalty for it. "Of course, the manager takes the blame and I wholeheartedly accept that, as that's football, but what I can't get my head around is the individual mistakes- unless it stops, we're going to struggle badly." If the Blues are successful, it'd be their first appearance in the fourth qualifying round since Harry Dunn's first spell in charge at the Turnbull Ground. On that occasion, Dunn's Town overcame Bromsgrove Rovers, before losing out at Hartlepool United in the First Round. Dunn also steered Whitby to replay defeats at league clubs Hull City in 1996 and Plymouth Argyle in 2001. But it was as manager of Blyth that Dunn reached the holy grail of the Third Round for the first time in his managerial career- future Whitby player Ged Dalton's goal saw off Bournemouth 1-0 in the second stage of 2008, after defeating Shrewsbury Town in the first, 3-1. Dunn's men finally lost out by a single strike to Sam Allardyce's Blackburn Rovers- ironically they saw off Whitby in the second qualifying round after a replay- the two teams' last meeting. Defender Andy Leeson is set to line up against his former club- the defender netted against Shrewsbury and made over 300 appearances for the Green and Whites before joining the Seasiders in 2009. Cassidy is hoping he and his team-mates can rise to the occasion, using Wednesday's belated improvement as inspiration. He added: "We've got to have a continuation of that second half performance, give Blyth a fright and give them a game." Kick-off at the Turnbull Ground is the usual 3.00pm with admission set at £8 for adults, £5 Concessions and £2 Under 16s. If the scores finish level, there'll be a replay at Spartans' Croft Park on Tuesday night with a 7.45pm kick-off. Blues tackle Tigers in six-pointerBy Andrew SnaithIt's a big week at the Turnbull Ground as rivals at the wrong end of the Evo-Stik Premier Worksop Town visit in a six-pointer on Wednesday, before Saturday's FA Cup clash with old adversaries Blyth Spartans. And Blues' Manager Tommy Cassidy believes the midweek meeting is the more important game, he told the Whitby Gazette: "Worksop had a great win Saturday, which suprised me to be honest, for them to win 3-0. "We've all got to come to the table- Me, the players- weve all got to come to the table and get a win for Whitby Town Football Club." The Nottinghamshire club, nicknamed the Tigers, were languishing beneath the Blues before their weekend victory over in-form Nantwich- a first success for debutant boss Simon Clark, which took them up two places, something not lost on his opposite number. "I look at the table and we've lost six and I see about 12 other teams who've lost the same or more than us. "If we win on Wednesday, we could maybe go up two or three positions and set us up for Saturday and the FA Cup." Blue Square North Blyth, so often Town's nemesis back in the Northern League and in the FA Cup, visit at the weekend, with £7,500 up for grabs. However, Cassidy, who used to manage the Northumberland club's hated rivals Gateshead, is firmly focused on league action, he lamented: "So many times this season, we've drawn when we should have won the game. "The chances we've missed and the silly goals we've given away." The former Workington manager admits there will be changes from the side that lost 3-2 at Rushall Olympic this past weekend. One of those looks sure to be up front as on-loan Callum Hassan returns after missing out in the West Midlands, due to a one-match ban for picking up five yellow cards. Meanwhile, a Whitby striker on-loan elsewhere, found the net for the first time this season. Ex-Middlesbrough marksman Andy Campbell may have been representing Northern League Norton & Stockton on Saturday, but he also suffered a 3-2 defeat, despite scoring the Teesside club's opening goal against Dunston UTS. Kick-off at the Turnbull Ground on Wednesday is 7.45pm, with admission still just £8 for Adults and £5 Concessions, with Under 16s admitted for only £2 each. The Blues also now know they visit Woodley Sports and their artificial pitch in the FA Trophy on Saturday 22nd October. The Cheshire outfit, currently sixth in the league below, defeated fellow Evo-Stik Division One North highflyers Skelmersdale United 4-3 at the weekend. Five years ago, Town lost 3-2 to Sports in the same competition on the dreaded 3G surface. Cassidy: Prepare for a new attitude and we can play betterBy Andrew SnaithWhitby Town Manager Tommy Cassidy says his side will travel to Rushall Olympic for the first time this weekend, with a new attacking attitude after the weekend's dramatic FA Cup win. The Blues beat rivals North Ferriby United in the Second Qualifying Round, after an 87th minute Jake Faichney winner, to book a date with more old adversaries in Blyth Spartans, at the Turnbull Ground on Saturday 15th October. The Ulsterman was reasonably happy with his side's display but warned: "We can play a lot better than that. "We had a great training session (on Wednesday), there was lots of laughter and everyone's together. "If we can bring that onto the pitch, we will definitely progress." The former Apoel Nicosia and Gateshead boss remains keen to concentrate only on his own side, adding: "I don't go along with a lot of managers ringing up about every team they play. "I'm just concerned about my own team, I've told them time and time again, if we play well we will win the game. "That might not sound professional to some people, but that's the attitude I have. "I need to get my team right, select the right players, play the right way, everybody give everything they have and we'll beat the majority of teams in this league." But Cassidy still has plenty of respect for their Walsall-based hosts, newly-promoted from the Evo-Stik First Division South and still unbeaten on home soil: "They've come up into our league this season, it's new to them, they'll be very enthusiastic and keen. "They've had some good results and they're in the top ten. "We've got to get some consistency in- I've not seen them play, but I'm sure if we play well, we'll make it very hard for Rushall." On Saturday, the ex-Newcastle United and Northern Ireland star replaced long-serving keeper Dave Campbell with Tom Courtney- 17 years his junior. Courtney revealed that he didn't know of the decision until the teams were read out in the dressing room, in order to avoid nerves the night before. Cassidy says Courtney's Cup display, including a vital penalty save, shows the importance of having competition for places all over the pitch: "Cam knows he was a wee bit under confident, so I brought Tom in to give him a chance, he's a lot of enthusiasm and he did very very well indeed. "It's up to Tom to stay in and Cam to get back in and if you're getting two players pulling that way, you're onto a winner. "If Cam gets in and does well, he will stay in. He's done very very well for me, but he's 41 and we can't get away from that fact. "Long term and even short term, let's be honest, we do need a younger goalkeeper." Meanwhile, in the wake of Andy Campbell's month-long loan to Northern League Norton & Stockton, Cassidy has challenged his other forwards to establish themselves in the first team. He added: "(Matty Tymon's) worked reasonably hard and Jake came on and scored the winning goal. "These two lads now have got a chance to impose themselves, as well as Big Rob McDermid and Matty Dunford- that's what competition's all about. "Get in, do well and stay in- and they will stay in, if they do well." A supporters coach leaves the Turnbull Ground at 8.30am on Saturday, with seats just £10 each. Kick-off at Dales Lane is the usual 3.00pm and admission as follows: Adults £7.50, Concessions £4.00 and Juniors under-12 admitted free of charge, with a paying adult. WTFC v North Ferriby United - FA Cup 2Q - Sat 1st OctoberTown tackle old adversaries North Ferriby United on Saturday in the second qualifying round of the FA Cup- with Budweiser.Ferriby, who were famously defeated 3-0 at Wembley Stadium in the FA Vase Final- Whitby's finest hour- are the second opponents on the road to the home of football- with £4,500 up for grabs. Blues boss Tommy Cassidy has revealed he'll be ditching the controversial one up front formation employed in the last two matches, claiming he'll field "at least two" strikers, for the knock-out clash. Victory at the Turnbull Ground would leave Town just two wins away from a first round proper berth. Their last appearance at that stage was at Hartlepool United in 2003, when Marco Gabbiadini netted twice in a 4-0 Pools victory. After Wednesday's 3-0 reverse at FC United of Manchester, Cassidy said there'd be a change in approach from his side, stating: "We do what we can do best. "Never mind the other team, we gave them too much respect, too much of the ball and it backfired badly. "We've got a massive game in the FA Cup, but the wonderful thing about football is we get another chance on Saturday and we've got to get it right- on and off the pitch." Meanwhile, Town's East Yorkshire visitors are just one place and one point above them in the league after six winless games. Manager John Anderson resigned at the start of the month with players Justin Whittle(ex-Hull City) and Paul Foot(formely with Scarborough FC) in caretaker charge ever since. United defeated fellow Evo-Stik Premier strugglers Worksop Town 1-0 in the previous round to set up the meeting, while the Blues picked off Northern Counties East side Parkgate, 3-1. Cassidy, who reached the FA Cup Final as a player with Newcastle United in 1974, is hoping midfielder Lewis Hawkins will be fit for the clash, after missing out midweek with a knee injury. He and Callum Hassan are currently on loan with the Blues from Hartlepool, with their manager Mick Wadsworth allowing the duo to represent Town in the coveted trophy. On the possibilities of a Hawkins comeback for the lucrative tie, Cassidy said: "I think he's got a chance. He added: "It's important we get our heads right for Saturday." Kick-off at the Turnbull Ground is 3.00pm with admission the usual £8 for adults, £5 concessions and £2 under 18s. If the match is drawn, there'll be no extra time, but a replay on Tuesday night at Ferriby's Rapid Solicitors Stadium with a 7.45pm kick-off. Cassidy: Hassan has more to offerBy Andrew SnaithWhitby Town manager Tommy Cassidy is looking forward to Wednesday night's trip to FC United of Manchester and believes there's more to come from on-loan striker Callum Hassan. The powerfully-built 6'3" 18-year-old played as a lone striker in Saturday's 1-1 draw with Matlock, making a memorable debut. And Cassidy thinks the youngster from Hartlepool United will improve throughout his month with Town. The Blues' boss told the Whitby Gazette: "We've got to get to know him very well, at the moment, he's still a stranger in the camp. "I thought he did all right, he's won his headers and probably on Wednesday night, we'll see him play better. "I think he will be successful here in the next four weeks." The former Northern Ireland star paid tribute to another midfielder, also on a temporary spell from Victoria Park, Lewis Hawkins. Cassidy is hoping the teenager can recover after limping off with a knee injury at the weekend, adding: "I thought he did very very well indeed, his passing was good and he ran at people." Approaching the first anniverary of his appointment, the Whitby manager thinks too many draws have cost his side so far: "After 11 games and you've only lost four of them, you think you haven't done badly, but there's been six draws. "So we've lost 12 points in those games, (on Saturday) I put someone on to try and win the game. "But its a long season, we've got to try and build for the future and I think I am doing at the moment." Cassidy also revealed that he's recieved an offer from Northern Counties East side Barton Town Old Boys for striker Rob McDermid, who didn't feature on Saturday. The Ulsterman wants the frontman- a towering presence like Hassan- to stay with Whitby. He admitted the summer capture from Kirkbymoorside needs football, but is still part of his plans at the Turnbull Ground. Meanwhile Cassidy thinks the Blues have a real opportunity to end their six-match winless run against United on Wednesday. The upbeat former Newcastle United star enthused: "I'm really looking forward to getting down there, I think the pitch will suit us as we try and play a bit of football now. "Maybe a year ago or last season, I'd have thought it would be very difficult. "But I still think we've got a great chance of winning the game." The Lancashire side, formed by Manchester United supporters in 2005, play at Bury's Gigg Lane and currently lie ninth in the Evo Stik Premier. Kick-off is 7.45pm, with admission set at £8 for adults, £5 Over 60s and £2 for Under 18s. The Blues entertain North Ferriby United on Saturday in the FA Cup second qualifying round, with £4,500 prize money at stake. Cassidy continues to build for the futureBy Andrew Snaith Matlock Town visit the Turnbull Ground on Saturday, as Whitby return to Evo-Stik Premier action and manager Tommy Cassidy continues to develop his squad. The Blues boss signed Hartlepool United duo Callum Hassan(18) and midfielder Lewis Hawkins on Monday. 6"2' Hassan impressed up front against the Seasiders in pre-season and has five goals from three starts for the Pools' Reserve side. Hawkins also comes recommended and Cassidy admits their quality could cause him a headache. "Callum's a physical presence, he's scored a couple of goals on loan for Harrogate, hopefully he can come here and slot in well. "Lewis Hawkins is highly rated and we've got Ross Gardner as well, so I've got a selection problem. "It's the first time I've had that since I've been here, so it's going to be very competitive, which is what we need." Cassidy admitted some players may end up loaned out of the club as a result: "I've told one or two players, I don't want them on the bench or out of the squad for long periods, but I also want access to them when we need them, so that's what we're doing." "We have lacked a physical presence up front and Callum has that- I've seen him in training and he's done well." Matlock have lost just once in ten so far this season and that was against promotion-chasers Bradford Park Avenue, who hammered Whitby 4-1. The Gladiators, managed by former Blackburn Rovers and Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Mark Atkins, currently lie 9th and replaced the league's golden boot winner Ross Hannah with his Evo Stik First Division South equivalent. Hannah was snapped up by League Two Bradford City in the summer, so Atkins brought Ian Holmes, who netted 34 times for Glapwell last term, back to his old club. Cassidy also continued to reveal his future plans at the Turnbull Ground, he told the Whitby Gazette: "We don't have lots of money, so we need to give young players a chance, then in seven or eight months, we have them ready to go. "That's the way I've always done it. "It won't be immediate success, but hopefully it will be long term success." The Seasiders certainly have a tough task against the Derbyshire outfit, with just two Whitby wins in the last 13 meetings between the clubs. But Cassidy believes there are positive signs after his 11 months in charge: "We've improved the training, the professionalism, the fitness and mindset of the players. "It's important we get the fans on our side- the hardcore have been brilliant and we're saying to the rest- come and support us, help us produce. "That's how football works- supporters help players and players play well to get supporters through the gate." Kick-off on Saturday is the usual 3.00pm, with admission £8 for Adults, £5 Concessions and just £2 for Under 16s. The Blues found out on Monday that they host North Ferriby United in the second qualifying round of the FA Cup on Saturday 1 October. Town defeated Parkgate 3-1 last weekend, while Ferriby knocked out fellow Evo Stik Premier side Worksop Town. The tie is a repeat of the 1997 FA Vase Final, which Whitby won 3-0 at Wembley Stadium. Nantwich Town v Whitby Town - September 10th ko 3pmWhitby travel to Nantwich Town on Saturday looking for back to back wins after failing to net a victory from their first seven games. There's been 30 goals netted in Nantwich's last five games, after successive 4-3 defeats and a 4-4 draw. The Dabbers currently lie one place below the Blues in 17th and Tommy Cassidy's confident his men will keep them there if they can repeat Wednesday's performance, he told the Whitby Gazette: "If we do the same on Saturday, pass the ball well and battle, then we've a great chance. "The challenge now is getting it right at Nantwich, then we have Ashton and if we win those two games, we can go into the top ten. "I'm not saying we will, but we have the capabilities to do that." The former Newcastle United star was buoyed by the midweek win at Stocksbridge Park Steels, he revealed: "I saw a difference in the supporters and the chairman, it's such a big weight off our shoulders. "We've got to get ready for Nantwich on Saturday and personally, I'm really looking forward to it." Ashley Lyth(calf) and Dave McTiernan(groin) went off on Wednesday night, with Andy Campbell also carrying a rib injury, but all three have a good chance of figuring at the weekend. An upbeat Cassidy added: "I'm not concerned about any other teams, I'm only concerned about my team- if we play well, we can beat any team in this league. "And if we play well on Saturday, we will win the game." A supporters coach leaves the Turnbull Ground at 9.00am. Seats priced at just £10 each with admission at Nantwich's Weaver Stadium as follows: £9 for Adults, £6 Concessions, £2 Childre Whitby Town v Chorley- Sat 3 SeptemberWhitby take on high-flying Chorley for the first time in nearly 11 years when the Lancashire side visit the Turnbull Ground on Saturday. Blues fans will be pleased to hear their club are unbeaten against the Magpies, with a win and two draws from past meetings. The most recent clash was in the FA Cup when Lee Ure and Lee Ludlow ensured a 2-0 Town win way back at the tail end of September 2000. The sides met during the Blues' first Northern Premier season with a 2-2 draw at Victoria Park and Graham Robinson's strike clinching another share of the spoils in the return. Gary Flitcroft's men, promoted from the Evo-Stik One North last season, currently sit second with their first defeat suffered last Monday against Merseysiders Marine. Flitcroft has younger brother Steve Flitcroft in his ranks as well as another ex-Rovers star in striker Matt Jansen. Meanwhile the Seasiders are looking for their first win of the season, Kev Burgess suffered a broken nose against Frickley so may miss out. Physio Kenny Bolton hopes he and forward Andy Campbell, who has a rib injury, will make the crunch clash. Fellow frontman Matty Tymon limped off with a hamstring pull on Monday but should be available. Admission for Saturday's 3.00pm kick-off at the Turnbull Ground is as follows: £8.00 Adults, £5.00 Concessions, £2.00 Under 16s. Blues in Bank Holiday DoubleBy Andrew SnaithThe Seasiders play twice over the long Bank Holiday weekend with a first-ever trip to former Conference National club Stafford Rangers first-up on Saturday. Rangers have also failed to win so far this season after their relegation from the Conference North in April. Whitby Town manager Tommy Cassidy admitted he was "suprised" by the Staffordshire side's plight, he added: "apparently they've lost some players and not doing so well." "They're in the same position as us. It won't be easy, it's a long way down there, but we're going for the win there and on Monday." The Blues tackle Yorkshire rivals Frickley Athletic at the Turnbull Ground on Monday- Athletic are also struggling with just one win against ailing Burscough, who have problems on and off the field. Whitby have 16 wins to Frickley's eleven, with eight draws between the two outfits. Town have now led at half-time in their first four matches only to lose or draw, failing to score in the second half. Cassidy's puzzled, admitting it's "a difficult one to sum up, but we've only played four games- we're going to take the good things out of them and hopefully take those into Saturday's game." "If a game was 45 minutes long we'd be top, but its not about fitness. "It's difficult to estimate where you're going to finish- I've seen teams top after six games and get relegated." The former Northern Ireland star also revealed he was looking to get at least one player into his squad for the weekend, possibly two. He doesn't know his full squad yet, but is unlikely to go above 19. "Some players are going to be disappointed, but that's football", he added. A supporters coach leaves the Turnbull Ground for Stafford at 8.30am, with admission at Marston Road as follows: (Seating add £2) Adults £9.00, Concession £6.00 (Senior Citizen/Armed Forces/Students in Full Time Education) - Proof of identity and Age Required, Under 16's £4.00, Children Aged 12 and under will be admitted to the ground for FREE if accompanied by an ADULT PAYING PARENT OR GUARDIAN. (Maximum 2 Children to 1 Adult). Monday's match is also a 3.00pm kick-off at the Turnbull Ground with admission remaining just £7.50 for adults, £4.50 concessions and £2.00 for under 16's. Blues Lake-ing for first win at KendalWhitby visit the Lake District on Tuesday night still looking for their first win of the season at the fourth attempt. And the Blues have a less than impressive record on their travels against Kendal Town- they're looking for just their second ever win at the ninth time of asking. The Seasiders won 1-0 back in March 1998 when Kendal were known as Netherfield- Andy Toman scored the fastest goal in the club's history after 17 seconds. Last season's corresponding game saw the Blues lose out 2-1 with Ibby Hassan sent off in injury time. Manager Tommy Cassidy is particularly worried with his side's poor passing of late, he told the Whitby Gazette: "It's a big concern, we've got to put it right. "We can't hold the ball- I'm talking about passing a ball ten yards under no pressure. "Every training session, we pass the ball all night long." The Blues' boss will be without striker Rob McDermid once again due to a shoulder injury, but midfielder Marc Ellison should be available after illness. Cassidy also revealed he's had a stressful opening to the season: "It's been a traumatic week. "We've been one up at half time three times and it's gone wrong. "We've got to get on with it Tuesday and we have to understand the way we want to play and keep the ball." The Blues' Cumbrian hosts have had a mixed start to the new season, beating Worksop 3-0 on the opening day before their scheduled trip to Northwich Victoria was called off after the Vics failed to secure the right paperwork to show they now own their ground. Lee Ashcroft's men then went down 1-0 to a penalty at Matlock Town this past weekend. Kick-off at the Lakeland Radio Stadium is 7.45pm, with admission £8 for adults, concessions £4, Children £2 or £1 when accompanied by a paying adult. Whitby Town v Mickleover Sports - Sat 20th Aug - KO 1500hThe Blues will be desperate to bounce back on Saturday after Wednesday night's second half horror show against Bradford Park Avenue.Avenue are strongly-fancied to push for promotion in the Evo-Stik Premier this season, but with 54 minutes gone at the Turnbull Ground, Whitby led 1-0 and had a one man advantage. However, the visitors' early red card made little difference as John Deacey's men slammed home four goals, including two in the last five minutes to humble the Seasiders. Whitby manager Tommy Cassidy was furious with his side's performance after the break, he told the Whitby Gazette: "We didn't compete, we rolled over- all over the pitch they were better. It's not acceptable whatsoever. "I'll use the word embarassing- it was an embarassing second half performance. We let the club down." Cassidy, who has promised changes for Saturday's clash, continued: "There was no battle and no fight and obviously the mistakes for the goals were diabolical. "We looked like a pub team second half- a team that was second best everywhere, that gave the ball away for fun, that didnt win the ball at all and didn't create anything going forward." The Belfast-born boss praised the opposition but found it hard to forgive his own side's poor display, adding: "They'll be up there, Bradford, at the end. They're a good physical side and tried to play as well. "But I don't think we got three consecutive passes in, it's a serious matter and me and Tony(Elliott) will be looking into it. "No-one is assured of their place after those performances, not one player." Cassidy and his team will be hoping they can kick on from last season's double over Derbyshire outfit Mickleover Sports. Town won 3-2 against them on this weekend last year and enjoyed a 4-2 away success towards the end of the season which guaranteed the club's league safety. Dick Pratley's side are in just their second Northern Premier campaign- they drew 1-1 at newly-promoted Rushall Olympic in midweek after defeating Nantwich 3-1 at the weekend. Kick-off is 3.00pm at the Turnbull Ground on Saturday, with admission £8 for adults, £5 concessions and just £2 for under 16s. Town are in the Lake District when Kendal are their hosts on Tuesday, a supporters coach leaves the club at 3.15pm. Whitby Town v Bradford Park Avenue - Wed 17th Aug - KO 1945hWhitby welcome Bradford Park Avenue to the Turnbull Ground this Wednesday with a 7.45pm start. It's the first home Evo-Stik Premier game of the season for Tommy Cassidy's men with Avenue one of the promotion favourites despite an opening day defeat.John Deacey's side went down 1-0 at home to new boys Hednesford Town on Saturday- the Staffordshire club were moved across from the Southern League during the summer. Avenue have eleven wins to Whitby's four in past meetings, with their most recent success coming in March, 2-1 at the Turnbull, after a disputed penalty settled a dour encounter. Cassidy later said he "felt sorry for fans having to watch that", before pledging an improvement this season. The Blues' manager will be hoping the return of defender Ibby Hassan from suspension will help. Former Hartlepool United midfielder Marc Ellison, fresh from a spell in Sweden, is also available after a ban and may make a competitive debut. Goalkeeper Dave Campbell will again miss out due to an ankle injury. Admission for 2011-12 at the Turnbull Ground is £8 Adults, £5 Concessions and £2 Under 16s. Children can enjoy a 50% discount if they've collected the tokens inside Friday and Tuesday's Whitby Gazette. They must be accompanied by a paying adult however. Town are again at home on Saturday when Derbyshire outfit Mickleover Sports visit. Chasetown v Whitby Town- Sat 13 Aug 3.00pm- PreviewThe Blues travel to Chasetown on Saturday as the new season kicks off in the Evo-Stik Northern Premier.Last season, the sides drew 1-1 at the Scholars Ground, when Kev Burgess' bicycle kick ensured a share of the spoils for the Seasiders. Burgess will be without usual central-defensive partner Ibby Hassan, who serves a one-match suspension held over from last season. Manager Tommy Cassidy is likely to give a debut to former Sunderland defender Darren Williams (34), who made over 200 appearances for the Black Cats and signed for Whitby this week. 19-year-old midfielder Callum Martin, picked up from Hartlepool United should also make his first competitive start for the Blues, with fellow ex-Pools midfielder Billy Blackford(19) and former Morecambe goalkeeper Matt Calvert(18) also in contention. That's due to record-breaking gloveman Dave Campbell's ankle injury, which is still a few weeks away from healing. Chris Batchelor will be away playing cricket and Marc Ellison, another youngster from Hartlepool, misses out through suspension. Chasetown finished 10th in their first season at this level- they also reached the Quarter Finals of the FA Trophy, before losing out in a replay against eventual finalists Mansfield Town. Referring to Saturday's big kick-off, Cassidy told the Whitby Gazette: "There's a lot of hard work been done over the last five or six weeks, we needed a little break but now it's all systems go and everyone at the club is looking forward to it." Without the influential Hassan who got the supporters' player of the season last term, Cassidy admitted: "It's a bit of a blow really, we've got 17, 18, 19 to pick from this season, so we've just got to get on with it. "It will be a hard game, it's a very very difficult start, but I think the players are up for it, we had a great training session on Tuesday- very enjoyable and great exercise so everyone's raring to go." Kick-off on Saturday is the usual 3pm, with admission £9 for adults, £5 for concessions and £3 for under 16s. The Seasiders play their first home league game of the new season on Wednesday when Bradford Park Avenue are the visitors, while Mickleover Sports are at the Turnbull Ground on Saturday week. Whitby Town v Darlington - Saturday 30th July 2011Conference Premier Darlington will field a full first team squad when they visit the Turnbull Ground on Saturday. It's likely to be the biggest test for Tommy Cassidy's Whitby side who've already faced Darlo's local rivals Hartlepool United, Vase-holders Whitley Bay and are just two weeks away from the big kick-off in the Evo-Stik Northern Premier. Despite a 2-0 defeat against a young Pools side on Monday, skippered by record appearance maker Richie Humphreys, Cassidy remains upbeat. He told the Whitby Gazette: "It was good and bad. We were playing against a full-time side with plenty of energy and showed a bit of fitness. "There are good things and bad things we need to get better on, but I'm reasonably happy. "Certain players aren't quite up to fitness yet, but once that comes together, we'll be in a much better position. "I don't care about results, I'm just interested in individual players and how they perform." Cassidy, who appeared on BBC Tees' Sports Show Tuesday evening, confirmed Mark Cooper would be bringing Darlington's full first team. "It'll be a difficult game, a hard game for us. But we've got to progress and we've seen some progression. Some players won't make it, but they'll get a chance." As for newcomers to the side, the former Newcastle star, revealed: "There could be a couple in the next week or so that I hope we can get sorted out, but I'll have to wait and see." The Quakers are likely to field attacking midfielder Jon McReady at some stage- the 19-year-old was Cassidy's first signing and spent two months with the Blues on loan last season. Darlington defeated a strong Middlesbrough side, including Lita, Emnes, Robson and Kink, 4-2 last weekend, but lost out 2-1 at Evo-Stik One North Sheffield FC in midweek, after making just three changes. Kick-off at the Turnbull Ground is 3.00pm with admission remaining just £5.00 for Adults, £3.00 Concessions and £1.00 for Under 18s. Whitby Town v Whitley Bay - Saturday 23rd July 2011Whitby tackle the FA Vase holders for a record three seasons- Whitley Bay- this Saturday at the Turnbull Ground. The Northern League First Division side haven't met the Blues since Town were promoted from the then-Unibond League First Division in 1998. Since then, the Tyneside club have racked up four Vase triumphs- Town notably lifted the trophy in 1997 after defeating North Ferriby United 3-0 on the way to promotion and a league and cup double. Ian Chandler's men narrowly missed out on promotion back to what is now the Evo-Stik First Division North- one league below Whitby- after finishing behind second-placed Consett on goal difference after a last day draw. Bay lost assistant manager Steve Cuggy, who replaced Mick Tait as Blyth Spartans boss earlier this summer and took with him coach Gavin Fell, plus players David Coulson, Tom Kindley and Lee Mason. Blues manager Tommy Cassidy should have striker Ash Davis back from holiday, though goalkeeper David Campbell's ankle injury is worse than first thought and the veteran could be sidelined for another fortnight. Cassidy is under no illusions about the quality of the opposition, he added: "I'm a big lover of the Northern League, I see a lot of players and go to a lot games. The standard is very good indeed and some players could easily play in the Conference. "There's a wee bit of rivalry I think and it'll be a very hard game for us. We havent conceded any goals in the last few games and hopefully that'll continue on Saturday. But I'm not looking for results, I'm looking at individual players to see how they react." Town also welcome NPower League One Hartlepool United on Monday evening with a 7.00pm kick-off at the Turnbull Ground. Last weekend, Cassidy signed Callum Martin, Billy Blackford and Mark Ellison- all midfielders from Pools. A fourth former Hartlepool player, defender Tom Marron, has featured in both Whitby's pre-season outings so far- the right-back made 44 appearances for Evo-Stik One North Garforth Town last term. Kick-off on Saturday is 3.00pm. Pickering Town v Whitby Town - Tuesday 19th July 2011Whitby's annual short trip to Mill Lane takes place Tuesday with a 7.30pm kick-off. The Blues are hoping to continue a run of back-to-back 2-1 victories in the traditional pre-season fixture. Manager Tommy Cassidy is expecting to welcome back defender Ashley Lyth and striker Ash Davis- neither figured in the weekend win over Fishburn Park. Injured duo Dave Campbell and Chris Batchelor are both set to miss out, though Campbell should be back to face Whitley Bay at the Turnbull Ground on Saturday. In the corresponding game last season, Jamie Owens- now at Norton & Stockton and Nathan Cook (Bridlington Town) were on target for the Seasiders. The Pikes have been decimated by a number of players defecting to Bridlington, including Cook, who went on to join Pickering and is the son of Brid's new boss Mitch Cook- Vase-winning former Blues player and more recently, Pickering manager. Ged Dalton, Josh Greening and Wayne Aziz are all expected to tread the same path from Whitby, via Pickering, to Queensgate over the summer. The Seasiders travel to Bridlington for a pre-season clash in two week's time(2 August). |
