Report - www.whitby-town.com - WHITBY Town slumped to a disappointing late defeat to an impressive Prescot Cables outfit on Wednesday night.

With the main stand finally open and filled with an expectant crowd Whitby were first to show on six minutes when Ant Ormerod set up leading scorer Danny Brunskill to shoot just over the bar.

Four minutes later Brunskill was at it again when he chased down a long ball but this time the keeper McMahon saved with his legs.

With 17 minutes on the clock Whitby nearly took the lead when Ricky Greening flicked on a corner and Danny Farthing nearly poked the ball home in a goalmouth scramble before it was hacked away to safety.

With Whitby seeming to run out of ideas and Ormerod and Brunskill being starved of service Prescot gradually began to get back in to the game.

And they were to get even keener when they felt midfielder Michael O'Donnell was fouled when he came off worst in a clash with Scott Nicholson after they both went up fairly for a ball.

It took Prescot until injury time to have their first real effort on goal when O'Donnell's low shot was saved by David Campbell.

With the crowd hoping for an improved Blues' performance it was Prescot who came out for the second 45 minutes looking the better side.

But it was only in the last 15 minutes that either team got anywhere nearly the goal.

On 75 minutes Whitby should have been ahead when Ormerod sprinted clear and crossed to an unmarked Chris Batchelor but his woeful effort was high and wide.

Two minutes later tricky winger Mark Duffy, who spent most of the first half infuriating his manager, hit the bar with a piledriver from the edge of the box.

And Duffy was at it again two minutes later when he jinked his way down the wing and crossed for Kevin Garfoth but his tame effort was blocked by Campbell and with the goal at his mercy Carl Rendell waited too long and Danny Farthing lunged in to deflect the ball over the bar.

With time running out and Prescot looking the likelier to score, Whitby broke away thanks to a great run down the right by Ormerod who found sub Dave McTiernan who crossed for Brunskill but he was denied by the keeper's legs again.

And the Whitby fans were to be left frustrated once again when Duffy – outstanding in the second period – skinned Batchelor and sent over an inviting cross.

With three Prescot strikers queuing up for glory and the Whitby defence all over the place, Rendell side-footed home to leave Dave Logan wondering where it had all gone wrong.
