Only three minutes were on the clock when Ant Ormerod scored with an excellent volley. A mix-up between Ossett goalkeeper Neil Bennet and central defender Kirk Wheeler saw his looping clearance fall to Ormerod who volleyed it straight back into the top right-hand corner. And 12 minutes later they were 2-0 up when a long punt upfield was seized on by Scott Nicholson who blasted it into the far corner of the net from about 30 yards. Whitby piled forward in an impressive first-half performance and Ormerod scored his second on 35 minutes. A long ball was brought under control superbly and he beat two defenders before coolly slipping the ball into the bottom corner. But Ossett were thrown a lifeline when the referee inexplicably gave the home side a penalty when James Walshaw was judged to have been held. Veteran striker Andy Hayward stepped up to fire the penalty into the top corner for an unlikely goal. And when top-scorer Walshaw pegged another one back with a superb free-kick a minute after the restart it looked as though a dramatic comeback was on the cards. But Whitby re-grouped and pushed forward to finish the game off. Ormerod went close to his hat-trick and Danny Brunskill went close but a good defensive performance kept the home side at bay to secure the three points. |
