GRANT AWARDED

The Club wish to announce that they have been offered a grant of £150,000 from the Football Foundation towards the cost of the New West Stand.
Chairman Graham Manser said "We are extremely gratful for this offer of grant aid from the Football Foundation and we would like to express ourappreciation for the enthusiatsic support we have received from the owners of the ground, the Trustees of the Turnbull Charity Trust. We will now be liasing with the Trustees and finalising the contracts for construction with a view to commencing building in the Spring. I would also like to thank our supporters and the population of Whitby and District for their financial support.
The next fundraising event for the new complex is a formal Xmas banquet and ball with dance band in the Spa Pavilion on 10 Decemeber, further details are available from Martin Hart on 01947 601599

Latest Stand news

The excellent Whitby Town banquet and ball is once again being held this festive season and chief organiser Martin Hart has informed me that a table has become available. There will also be an auction of sports memorabilia including an autographed Sunderland shirt, plusplenty of other items to be bid on. If anyone has anything to donate then contact Martin. Please contact Martin on 01947 601599 to book the available table

Meanwhile the amount raised by the public for the new stand has reached an amazing £52,800. The lastest event was the Whitby Gazette v Goths grudge match! After last years defeat the Goths were more than up for it and in a bruising match they ran out 3-0 winners with former Coventry and Newcastle defender Brain Kilcline marshalling the boys in black.

The sportmans dinner will be run again in the new year with Alan Kennedy as guest speaker, plus plans are also afoot for another fund raising concert at the Spa after the success of the Slade concert last July. As yet Martin doesn't want to reveal who has been booked until after the cotracts are signed.

News on the grant for the new stand should be available during the week commencing the 15th November. As soon as anthing concrete is heard then it will posted on this web site. Thanks again to everyone who has been donting money!

2nd Sep 2004 - October meeting to decide stand funding

At last some more news regarding the building of the new stand. Whitby Town have done everything in their power now and everything is place including the application to the Football Foundation for a grant. Scarborough Borough Council, North Yorkshire County Council and North Yorkshire Trading Standards have all given their approval to the new development.
The matter now lies in the hands of the Football Foundation who meet in mid-October. If the club are offered a grant, then the club need to accept the grant and complete the necessarries before the new stand can be built.
All this means that it will be virtually impossible to demolish the existing stand and begin work during this season, as the two centre floodlight pylons need to be removed. Clearly this would mean problems during the winter months.
The earliest start date would likely be April 2005. Everyones hard work and sweat will then be rewarded with a fantastic new facility for the club, which can only push us onwards and upwards.

Slade in Town in Summer

Get your Glam rock glad rags on as those crazy crazy Slade boyz are in town in the Summer for a Whitby Town FC benefit concert.Slade will be playing on the 9th July at the Spa and tickets are due to go on sale in mid April from the usual outlets. Tickets will be a bargain at £15 with local acts 5Divide and Most Wanted supporting.

Wednesday 25th February sees the Sportsmans dinner at the Saxondale and 8 more tickets have become available for this event. Eddie Gray and Jeff Winter are the guests. If you wish to attend please call Martin Hart on 01947 601599 or 07779 645908 as soon as possible.

3rd February - New Stand Press Release

The club are pleased to announce that planning permission for the new stand was granted at the planning committee meeting on Monday of Scarborough Borough Council.
Chairman Grham Manser said "I would like to thank everybody who has helped us get the stand this far and we will be talking to the two neightbours who objected to see if we can allay any of their concerns. We now have to obtain three independant quotes for all the work and then we can submit our application for grant aid tot he Football Foundation which could take 20 weeks to process."

2nd February - Thanks to everyone!

I've been asked by Mr Charlie Woodward, secretary of Whitby Town to pass on the thanks of himself & the Committee of WTFC to everyone who took the time & made the effort to write & email the planning office in support of the Club. Since the appeal was put out on Wednesday afternoon, the Council have received 45 letters & emails in favour of the new stand. Today, the planning committee voted UNANIMOUSLY to accept the proposal.
Support not only locally but from other football fans nationally & internationally have got together for the common good which is preserving the future of WTFC

28th January - URGENT PLEASE READ

Supporters of Whitby Town Football Club & football fans everywhere, the club NEEDS your help!
As most people know, Whitby desperately need a new stand to replace the dangerous one they have at present. Not only is it an eyesore but the League has deemed it MUST be replaced or the club will suffer relegation.
It now appears that the residents next to the ground, namely those on the seaward end, are not only against the stand for whatever reasons but are getting together a petition. Word has it that someone is even trying to get the vital sports grant blocked which would mean certain death to any idea of a stand.
Many people have said they would write a letter in support of Whitby's cause but as yet only ONE letter has been sent in. We urge you all to PLEASE write in favour of the new stand, stating the good the club does for the local community such as local finals played there (Sunday League, Seaton Gray primary children final, North Riding etc), charity games, fundraising games for the lifeboat TWICE a year, junior teams made up of local children, and many other events throughout the year.
This is urgent! The planning committee, club & residents meet this coming MONDAY so time is of the essence. Send your letters of support to :

Mr David Green (planning officer)
Scarborough Borough Council
10, Skinner St,
Whitby
YO21 3AQ

6th January - Planning decision delayed

The Planning committee of Scarborough Borough Council met last night to discuss the Whitby Town stand project, but the decision was delayed for a month.
The committee wish to view the site to make a better judgment after one objection was received by a neighbour.
The height of the standis an issue, I am informed, but the reduction in light pollution, the removal of an eyesore and two floodlights should be compensation enough!!
The committee will meet again on the first Monday in February.

UPCOMING EVENTS !!

Even though the Stand Fund is looking healthy these days thanks to the fantastic cup run there are still some brillaint events coming up over the next few months.

12th December sees a Grand Christmas Ball at the Spa pavilion, tickets are selling like hot cakes and there are only a few left. During the night there will be numerous items auctioned off for clubs funds including the following :-

Top of the tree are two tickets to see Manchester United v Southampton in the premiership at Old Trafford. But thats not all as it includes FULL corporate hospitality and entertainment, a four course meal and a box on the half way line!

Also to be auctioned is a signed Man Utd football from season 2002/03 The other superb item is a signed Newcastle United. This shirt is signed by the one and only Sir Bobby Robson and is dedicated to Whitby Town FC!!

I will be publishing telephone numbers on here soon so that anyone not at the function can ring up on the night and make a bid!!!

Before the Christmas ball there is a fund raiser at the Magpie Cafe! For £15 there are nibbles champagne and a famous Magpie fish supper. Everyone must where a football shirt to get in though. There are only 20 tickets left and this will be held on Tuesday 25th November.

In February there will be another sportsman dinner. Special guests will be Eddie Gray and Jeff Winter. Last year was a great success and tickets will be on sale soon.

For further details of any of the above, please call Martin Hart on 01947 601599 or 07779 645908

Football ground bid gets extra time

From www.whitbytoday.co.uk
WHITBY Town FC has been saved from relegation from the premier division of the Unibond League
- despite an appeal fund for a new complex standing at below the halfway mark.
The club was threatened with relegation by league bosses if a £45,000 shortfall was not found to upgrade facilities, including provision of a 350-seater main stand and clubhouse.
The appeal fund currently stands at £20,895 with the promise of more cash to roll in.
But chairman Graham Manser said the club had "exceptional circumstances" which meant their place in the league's top flight was secure for another season.
Mr Manser said the exceptional ciurcumstances were that the club did not own the ground, which meant borrowing money was difficult.
"I am pleased to announce, however, that provided certain work to the ground is completed by 7 June, we have satisfied the requirements of the ground grading committee of the Unibond League and our participation in the premier division is guaranteed for next season," he said.
"But I have to state that the majority of this work is of a temporary nature and does not provide a long-term solution."
The decision was reached at a league management committee meeting on Sunday.
The Blues have £70,000 invested from last season's epic FA Cup run, in which they reached the first round proper and took Plymouth - last season's third division champions - to a replay.
The appeal fund for the new complex is a joint venture between the Turnbull trustees, Whitby Town FC and Whitby Cricket Club.
A number of money-spinning events are in the pipeline - the next is a sportsmen's dinner sponsored by the Saxonville Hotel on 26 March.
Guest speakers are ex-Liverpool striker David Johnson and Premiership referee Jeff Winter.
Chart-toppers from the 70s, Showaddywaddy, are performing at Whitby Pavilion on 18 July in support of the appeal.
They will be joined onstage by 60s band Five Divide and local duo Most Wanted.
An Easter Bunny drink-a-thon has also been planned.
Supporters can donate their own seat in the stand costing £100. So far, 86 seats have been snapped up and more are available by contacting the club.
If you want to support the appeal, contact the club house on (01947) 603193 or the club office on (01947) 604847.

Celeb match a hit!

A classic Whitby Town team of 97, including former boss Mike Scaife defeated a useful an experienced celebrity XI 10-7 at the Turnbull Ground this morning. The match was 30 minutes each way.
Dave Goodchild was on top form, leading the line for the Seasiders, former skipper Dave Logan scored a tremendous left foot volley similar to that scored by Crystal Palace at Liverpool in midweek.
Emlyn Hughes, wearing a green bandage or support on his right leg stayed at the back, while former Big Breakfast star Mike Mclean converted a penalty and worked well alongside Brookside's Steve Fletcher and the pacey Steve Cole in attack for the celebs.
There were some crazy moments, including an own goal from former Sunderland star Mick Horswill, a shot at goal from referee Mr Rowntree, and Cammy playing outside!
Teams:
Whitby Town 1997 Select: David Campbell, Ian Williams, Michael Robson, David Goodchild, Lawrie Pearson, Mitch Cook, Kenny Goodrick, Neil Hodgson, Mike Hall, Mike Scaife, Dave Logan. Subs: Lee Ure, Dennis Wheeler, Carl Woodward, Graham Robinson.

Thanks to all involved.

3rd February - More fundraising events announced

As well as the Celebrity football XI that former England skipper Emlyn Hughes is bringing to the Turnbull Ground on Sunday, two more fundraising events have been announced today. Tickets go on sale soon at £12.50.

NGS in marathon fundraiser

Local Royal Marine Neil Salter today announced that he would be doing his bit for the Whitby Town stand appeal by running in the Lochabar Marathon on Sunday 27th April. Sponsors are needed as he wishes to raise as much as is possibly possible!
Neil told this page "I had told the club grandee's that I'd run the London Marathon for them, but my application was refused this year (note - he ran it in 3 hours last year!) so I decided I'd run the Lochaber one istead, which takes place about the same time.
My aim is to raise more than my old friend- the parachuting pensioner- John Thistle. I thought if an old man is jumping out of planes for the seasiders, the least I could do is run a marathon for them.
If any of the seasiders more far-flung fans would like to sponsor me, even if it's as little as 50p- it all counts- then send details to craig via the web site or via Charlie Woodward at the club"

Stars XI to play in stand fundraiser

Page 16 of today's Gazette announces that former Liverpool star Emlyn Hughes brings an all-star celebrity XI to the Turnbull on SUNDAY FEBRUARY 9TH AT 1130AM in aid of the Stand Appeal which is now upto £19,163.
Soap celebrities from BYKER GROVE, GRANGE HILL, EASTENDERS, HOLLYOAKS, EMMERDALE AND BROOKSIDE are set to appear.
As well as soap celebrities, the list also includes Omar from the Fantasy Channel!!!! plus ex-pros: David Johnson, Mike Milligan, Mick Horswell and Mr Hughes himself!!!
There is a meet the stars fundraiser in the clubhouse the night before at 7.30pm

Heartbeat Stars Fantastic Gesture

11th November - A bumper crowd turned out to support their local club's appeal for a fundraising game between two sides of 'Star' names past & present from the world of sport & television.
The result, if it mattered, was 6-4 to the "Legends" but the real winners on the night were the crowd who were entertained on the pitch as well as off it by Heartbeat cast members such as Geoff Hughes & Sarah Tansey who seemed to spend most of their time obliging fans by posing for photos & signing autographs.
The legends raced into an early lead but thanks to some skilful "extras", the Hearbeat team came back into the game after half time. The Whitby contingent of stars donned blue shirts & one by one added to the Heartbeat team until they had no less than EIGHTEEN players in their ranks.
One must ask the question of Premier League referee Jeff Winter.... "Was this how Sheffield United managed to beat Leeds United? Did they too have 18 players?"
A huge thank you must be given to members of both teams as well as attending celebrities who made the night such a success & hopefully added much needed funds to Whitby's campaign for the new stand.
Let's hope the 'new fans' this evening continue to follow the Blues over the coming months.
Heartbeat - J. Knipe, S.Ferguson, D.Bell, S. Gibson,, G. Proctor, D.Proctor, Steve Mitchell, Neil Shand, D.McConchie, Paul Wilcox, Jason Durr.
Whitby & Boro Legends - Jim Platt, Brian Honour, Martin Grey, Gary Gill, Nicky Mohan, Paul Kerr, Terry Cochraine, Stan Cummins, Mark Proctor,John Hendrie, Alan Shoulder, Mick Horsfield, Barry Monday. Dave Logan, John Borthwick, Kenny Goodrick, Steve Harland, Jimmy Scott, Ian Williams, Mitch Cook

Heartbeat stars out in force on Monday

. 6th November - PC Mike Bradley, Sgt Murton, Vernon Skrips, David Stockdale and Doctor Latimer are just a few of the Heartbeat stars who will be turning out to support the Whitby Town New Stand Appeal in a celebrity game between a Heartbeat XI and a Whitby Town all stars XI.
Turning out for the all stars will be John Hendrie, Paul Kerr, Mark Proctor, Terry Cochran, Jim Platt, Martin Gray, Yakka and Andy Toman! plus hopefully a special superstar big name that manager Harry Dunn is trying to organise. More to follow.

Heartbeat game on November 11th

27th October - The much promised game involving the stars of the popular sunday night drama Heartbeat has been arranged for the 11th November at the Turnbull. The opposition just might include Paul Gasgoine and Chris Waddle, both of whom have been conatcted and asked to play.
Everyone needs to get along to show their support as the new stand fund grows and grows. Another 30k is needed to get the project off the ground and safeguard our Unibond future and the future of the Club!

A LOCAL football fan is supporting Whitby Town FC's stand appeal by taking part in next month's Great North Run.

24th September - Simon Shipton (25), of Queen's Drive in Whitby, is seeking sponsors for the popular half marathon, which he runs for the first time on 6 October. The money he raises through the event will go towards the Blues' fund for the new stand, which they must have under way by 1 April next year. Simon, who supports Middlesbrough, said he played for Whitby Town at junior level and that prompted him to do something to help the club. He warmed up for the run when he took part in a seven-mile run at Egton, which was eventually won by Great Britain athlete Stephen Hepples. Whitby Town FC must have the present stand demolished and replaced by a 350-seater one. Whitby Cricket Club would also benefit from the new complex which would include a pavilion and a club house. The fund now stands at more than £10,000. Anyone interested in helping Simon can pick up a sponsor form from club chairman Graham Manser at the Nationwide Building Society, in Victoria Square.
o Whitby Town fans John Linsley and James Purvis are on cue to raise money for the stand appeal fund in a 12-hour pool marathon. The event takes place at the Stakesby Arms pub next Friday, from 6am to 6pm.

Stand Appeal gathers momentum

31st July - The appeal for the new complex at the Turnbull Ground recieved a tremendous boost with the donation of £1,000 from Dave Carrington of Skynet systems. Chairman Graham Manser said " This is a tremendous getsure by Dave and on behalf of the football club, cricket club and the trustees I thank him most sincerely. It just shows that when people move away they still leave their hearts in Whitby".
The appeal toatl now exceeds £5,000 with donations from Premier League Ref Jeff Winter and a Mr Panezai of Afganistan.
Plenty of fundraising events are being organised such as a celebrity footy match between a starXI and heartbeat XI, a sponsored walk from Scarborough FC to a Whitby Town home game and a sponsored 3 legged drinkathon! Any other bright ideas or donations to Graham Manser on 01947 893382 or 605921.

Cricket Club appeal

8th July 2002 - Whitby Cricket Club have launched a plea for help from business and public alike! In an effort to compete with other sides in their repective leagues, the club needs some serious investment in new equipment. The most important thing in replaying the pitch, which hasn't been touched in living memory. The leagues also require the club to provide decent toilets, catering facilities and scorebox. Rollers and mowers are also in need of replacement due to their antique value! Whitby Cricket club has 30-40 under 14s coming to their Friday night net session, but the kids do not have anywhere to play properly. For the future development of cricket in Whitby, any help you can give the club would be greatly appreciated. Contacts :-

New Stand Drawings now online

3rd July 2002 - Whitby Town have now released the first drawings of the proposed new development to this web page. Three drawings have been given to me.
1. A front and side elevations drawing - See drawing (114kb)
2. A plan view - See drawing (67kb)
3. An internal schematic - See drawing (79KB)
Please do not forget that we need help to build this stand, so if you do have any contributions or ideas then contact Graham Manser on the numbers below!!

Complex appeal launched

26th June 2002 - Whitby Town today announced their plans for a new complex that will be built to replace the existing old stand on the cricket pitch side of the Turnbull.
Blues chairman Graham Manser told this page "Our main stand is dilapidated and too small for the Unibond League. If it is not demolished by April 1st 2003 there is the very real possibilty that we could be relegated. A new stand will cost approximately £275,000. We have £70,000 and there are grants available up to £160,000, but this leaves us with a shortfall of around £45,000.
Any help however small would be greatly appreciated.
We are attempting to find a sponsor of £100 for every new seat and the name of every donor will be displayed on a board in the new complex. Businesses can send a cheque for £117.50 made out to "Whitby Town Football club" so that an invoice can be raised to acknowledge the sponsorship. Individuals should make their cheques out to "The Turnbull Trust"
Anybody who has any bright ideas please do not hesitate to contactme on 01947 605921, 07966 241344 or 01947 893382"
