Despite recieving a substanial offer for top scorer Danny Brunskill, Whitby Town can confirm that they turned down an approach from Gateshead flat. Chairman Graham Manser confirmed that Bruno was under contract until 2009 and was happy at the Turnbull. "I'd get lynched if we sold Danny" was the Chairman's words "and who could we get to replace such a great striker". Blues keep just nine as rebuilding starts

By Duncan Atkins www.whitbytoday.co.uk WHITBY Town Football Club is keeping just nine of last year's squad for next season as a major rebuilding programme beckons. More than half the side which finished midway down the UniBond League Premier Division are being axed.

The retained list for 2007-08 is:

Danny Brunskill

Dave Campbell

Alex Janes

Danny Farthing

Matty Appleby

James Drinkall

Tommy Raw

Ant Ormerod

and Phil Brumwell.

Boss Lee Nogan has re-registered as a player to help out in the event of an injury crisis although he is more likely to take a back seat.

But long-serving striker and last season’s player-coach Graham Robinson who played in the FA Vase-winning team in 1997 is uncertain of his future.

He is currently in talks with Nogan as to what place he may or may not have at the club.

Midfielder Karl Richards and winger Dave McTiernan are also victims of the clearout while others who came in on loan were deemed not good enough.

Nogan will now aim to strengthen all areas of the squad this summer and hopes some of the better youngsters from the new under 19s team can filter through into the first team.
"The squad may have to be a little bit thinner if we are looking for a bit more quality but we’ve signed left midfielder Karl Charlton from Northallerton after I had him watched a few times.

"He is a good direct player with lots of energy and fitness and he scored 20 goals last season. I look forward to seeing what he produces."

Central defender Danny Farthing has now had surgery on a serious knee ligament injury but may not return for the best part of a year.

"It could be we have to wait until a couple of months before the end of next season, but if that’s the case we will be happy with that.

"He will work hard to get back as soon as possible but he will be a big miss for us," said Nogan. "Hopefully we can bring in someone of his stature."

Sat 4 Aug Away at DUNSTON FED

Tue 7 Aug Home to DARLINGTON. Kick Off at 7.30pm.

WTFC MAKE THEIR FIRST NEW SIGNING

Attacking left sided mid-fielder, KARL CHARLTON joins Whitby Town from Northallerton on a one year deal. Manager Lee Nogan rates Karl very highly.
He is an 'exciting, young, left-sided midfield player in his second season of senior non-league football after signing for former club Northallerton from the Teesside Junior Alliance. Recently he has played for both Sunderland and Darlington at youth level.' As of January, he had already netted 15 goals for Northallerton who play in Northern League Division One and lined up against the Blues in the shock 5-0 victory for the minnows at the Turnbull Ground. A Northallerton fan commented that 'Karl has been a very big bonus to us and we wish him well at Whitby Town. The lad has great pace and good first touch and crosses the ball well, his attitude is first class, you won't regret signing him.
