WHITBY Town's four-match unbeaten run in the Unibond League came to an end as they were outclassed by Matlock on Saturday.
Boss Dave Logan said sloppy defending once again cost his side as they trailed 2-0 early on, leaving themselves with a mountain to climb.
"I'm putting it down to a bad day at the office," he told the Whitby Gazette yesterday.
"We never got competitive or put a foot in.
"We created a lot of half-chances but never made the keeper save any.
"I could have taken any one of the 11 off, they were that bad."
Logan said his side were confident going into the game but struggled to cope with some of Matlock's strikers.
"I said afterwards we can mope around and blame each other but collectively as a side we weren't good enough," he said.
"Sometimes you have to look forward to the next game and hopefully we will put it right tonight at Guiseley."
The writing was on the wall inside the opening 90 seconds when man of the match Simon Barraclough fired directly at keeper David Campbell when well placed. But the Gladiators soon took a grip on proceedings with two quality goals inside three minutes.
Barraclough was the instigator on both occasions, playing the ball into the path of Dene Cropper who lashed in a ferocious 20-yard left-footed drive for Matlock after 10 minutes. Steve Warne then cracked in a low shot from the edge of the box following more unselfish play by Barraclough.
Whitby tried to find a way back into the game but Matlock simply would not submit as Andy Richmond held headers from Anthony Ormerod and Aron Wilford, plus a free-kick from Nick Scaife.
There was more danger at the Whitby end as an almighty scramble ensued after Campbell had blocked a James Lukic drive. Soon afterwards, Richard Taylor joined the attack to blast narrowly wide.
The Gladiators virtually killed the match off by adding a third goal only two minutes into the second half. Warne, again outstanding in a central midfield role, was tripped by Danny Farthing as he burst into the box and Ian Clarke calmly despatched the spot-kick low past Campbell.
Whitby did well to stem the tide and both Danny Brunskill and Scott Nicholson went close from close range. But Matlock made it four with another top notch strike in the 79th minute as Barraclough had all the time in the world to chest the cross down and volley home for the goal his efforts deserved. Craig Veart's 88th-minute penalty, after Richard Taylor had pulled down Wilford, gave Whitby a consolation.
