UniBond Premier Division

14th October 2006

Lincoln United 1 0 Whitby Town

Attendance -

Team - Campbell, Wilkinson (Claisse 85), Brumwell, Appleby, Farthing, Wilford, McTiernan(Nogan 85), Drinkall, Raw(Robinson 70), Brunskill, Ormerod

Report - Manager Lee Nogan will wondering how Whitby Town left Lincoln on Saturday evening with nothing to show for a fine performance. Whitby's sixth defeat of the season was unlucky to say the least but they remain in fourth place in the league.
Neil Wilkinson replaced the injured Tom Reid at right back, but Nogan stuck with the side that beat Gateshead in midweek.
Whitby were first to show when David McTiernan pounced on some sloppy midfield work from the home side but his 20 yard efoort was stopped by the keeper to his right. Lincoln should have done better when they headed over when well placed a minute later.
James Drinkall then missed a sitter with only 5 minutes on the clock. Great work down the left flank by Anth Ormerod resulted in a low cross that evaded everyone but the on rushing Drinkall and with the goal at his mercy he blazed over from no more than 5 yards.
Tommy Raw came close 3 minutes later when his right foot shot went inches wide, then in the 13th minute top scorer Danny Brunskill did his trademark swivel and shot from 12yards following Raw's pass, but his effort went high and wide.
Lincoln's Wilkinson has an 18 yard effort easily saved by Dave Campbell in the Town goal and then Campbell was equal to a 30 yarder 5 minute later.
Just before the half hour mark good work from Aron Wilford released Brunskill down the right and his excellent control saw him cut in and fire a stinging shot that the keeper did well to parry away for a corner. McTiernan took the corner and Wilford headed toward goal and Brunskill flicked it further but the ball was cleared of the line to safety.

The second half started quietly for both sides before Town got onto their stride, however Lincoln had appeals for a penalty waved away and a glancing header inches wide.
The home side took the lead just after the hour when a long ball was misjudged by Wilford and Welch rounded Campbell to score from a tight angle.
Whitby then attacked the Lincoln goal in waves and should have equalised 10 minutes later however Brunskill's good work was wasted when Drinkall shot over from 8 yards this time.
Three minutes later the same player had his third chance of the match after McTiernan's effort was blocked, but again the ball sailed over from the edge of the box.
Drinkall then got himself in another good position and this time he hit the target but the keeper managed to parry his shot for a corner.
The manager introduced himself into the fray with 5 minutes left and then for the fourth time in the game Drinkall should have scored. He was put through on goal but his hard shot was hit straight at but well saved by the keeper.
Skipper Matty Appleby's 25 yards free kick was then well saved by the keeper before Nogan himslef fizzed one across goal from the right hand side.
The referee blew his whistle to cheers of relief from the home players who knew that they had survived a fierce onslaught.
