The Basics !

The most crucial factor in learning how to speak Whitby is getting your vowel pronunciation correct.

A should be pronounced without the y so if you speak posh you need to drop the y sound and make sure that it spoken with one tone.

E is pronounced is slightly nasal but this time there is a slight y sound on the end.

I is critical. Start high and end with a y sound. Try smiling slightly as you say it and remember to be a bit nasal.

O is the key. Make sure your mouth is dropped and groan in one tone. Do not use the w sound if you speak posh.

U is simple. It is said like You but with a definate w sound on the end.

Hello - 'elloh (hello), Noo dane (now then), ighyer (Hiya), Oo ist (how are you), Now mate (Hello friend), Ow a yer (how are you again).

Yes - aye, yeh (as in "oh aye")

No - noh. (the O is said as an o)

Been - bin (as in "as di bin om yit")

Away - awah (as in "arz awah")

Look - Skeg (as in "giz a skeg")

Give - giz (as in "giz yan")

Don't - Dane't (as in" R dane't nur")

Work - Wok (as in "arz garn ti wok")

Walk - w-alk (say the a sound) (as in " aye 'ad ti w-alk to wok")

Water - w-ater (say the a sound) (as in "giz a glass o w-ater")

Child / baby - Bairn (as in "eeee, wot a luvly bairn doos got")

Nice baby - Unny bairn (as in "noo dane unny bairn")

Where's - ways (as in "ways di bin")

You - Doo (as in "doo's nate rite int ed, doo int")

From - Fray (as in "ways doo fray")

Not - Nate (as in "doo's nate fray roond ere")

What's - Waits (as in "waits doo up ti")

Scarborough man - Algerino (as in " bloody algerino's av bunged poll tax up igin")

Middlesboro man - Townie or Slaggie (as in "is dee off ti slaggie island ti do dis shoppin")

Whitby - T'ord spot - (as in "ahh, yer can't beat t'ord spot when dis bin away")

Places to mention.

Doon toon - obviously down town

Sliguts - a village on the outskirts called Sleights (pronounced slights)

Steers - a village on the coast call Staithes

Tabbey - Ruins on top of the East cliff

Big A - main pub in the town

Choch street - Cobbled Street on east side

Boyziz - Cheesy store in center of town which sells crap

Bootsiz - Boots the chemist

99 steps - really 199 steps but noone can be arsed with the 100 bit

Chipoil - Your favourite chip shop eg Fuscos or Riverside
