Guiseley 4 Whitby Town 1
AFTER netting six goals on Saturday, Whitby must have been expecting more from this Tuesday night trip to league leaders Guiseley and, at times, they deserved more.
The scoreline was perhaps a little flattering to Guiseley who had to reshuffle their side due to injuries to three players.
Injuries meant the hosts were left a little short of midfield guile but the power of their big front line left the Whitby rearguard with plenty to do until the closing 20 minutes.
Up front, Saturday's hat-trick hero for the Blues, Tony Hackworth got little joy out of a disciplined Guiseley rearguard, which included ex-Blue Aron Wilford.
Whitby keeper Dave Campbell was called into action early in the game but then the Blues got their first chance to set up a goal when they were awarded a free-kick on halfway.
Skipper Matty Appleby floated the ball over but it was overhit and went out of play.
The closest Whitby came to carving out a chance in the first half was when Hackworth was put through to chase a ball which Guiseley keeper Steve Dickinson was quickly out to gather.
Home skipper Richard Dunning – another former Town player – put in a deep cross from the left and his effort was thumped away by the alert Campbell.
At the other end, Karl Charlton broke into the box but his effort was blocked by a defender on the edge of the area.
Guiseley opened the scoring when Rob Pell drilled the ball home in a goalmouth scramble in the 26th minute.
The lead was doubled six minutes later when young striker James Hanson cemented his role as the league's leading scorer with a magnificent strike.
In the second half, Whitby got back into the game and pulled the score back to 2-1 when, in the 48th minute, skipper Matty Appleby drilled home a penalty after a handball offence.
After a sticky patch in which Whitby came more into the game and Guiseley were left hanging on it was the home side who scored again.
An excellently taken corner by Henry was forced home by Denton from close range in the 70th minute.
This inspired Guiseley and Dean Walters netted a fourth goal in time added on to give them a convincing scoreline.
