UniBond Premier Division

4th December 2006

Gateshead 0 0 Whitby Town

Attendance - 180

Team - Whitby Town: Campbell, Claisse, Brumwell, Thomas, Farthing, Wilford, McTiernan, Drinkall, Raw (Robinson 86mins), Brunskill, Ormerod Subs not used: Reid, Nicholson

Report - from www.whitbytoday.co.uk - WHITBY Town picked up a useful point on Tyneside on Monday night but manager Lee Nogan will know his side should have had all three.
The Blues bounced back from a shock home defeat against Prescot Cables two days earlier and while they failed to score, they created a host of chances.
Anthony Ormerod had a header controversially ruled out in the first half and then top scorer Danny Brunskill clipped the top of the bar with a close range diving header after the break.
Whitby were the brighter side throughout though an improving Gateshead had their moments with on loan Doncaster Rovers youngster Craig Nelthorpe the main threat.
The winger headed a Craig Baxter cross against the bar after only four minutes after the Whitby defence had been caught out by David Southern's short free kick.
A linesman's flag then denied Ormerod an 18th minute opener when Brunskill unleashed a powerful 20-yard drive after he had run at the Gateshead defence.
The shot cannoned off the diving Simon Bishop but when Ormerod headed the loose ball into an empty net the flag was raised.
Two David McTiernan corners then caused problems for the Tynesiders with appeals for a penalty turned down after a Danny Farthing header appeared to strike an arm in a crowded box.
James Drinkall headed just wide at the back post from another McTiernan delivery and Aron Wilford's driven 30 yard free-kick was saved by Bishop at the second attempt.
Tommy Raw set up Ormerod in the six-yard box only for the striker to shoot just past the far post as the first half ended with Whitby on top.
Gateshead, unbeaten in four games, rallied briefly after the break as the lively Nelthorpe, one of six home players to be booked by the over-zealous Clark, forced David Campbell into two finger-tip saves.
But it was Whitby who should have gone on to win the game as the unmarked Brunskill somehow failed to hit the target with a close-range header from Ormerod's cross.
It was a glaring miss which was replicated when Ormerod put a free header wide from McTiernan's pinpoint set piece 15 minutes from the end.
Whitby almost went on to clinch the game in the last 10 minutes.
A quick break saw Stephen Thomas find McTiernan on the right but after going past Nelthorpe, McTiernan's angled shot was turned past the post by Bishop. Brunskill then put a glancing header narrowly wide as a game of many chances played on an excellent surface somehow ended goalless.
