Report - by Andrew Snaith - Whitby Town and new manager Harry Dunn grabbed their first points of the season, after a hard-fought Yorkshire derby that was much closer than the scoreline suggests. Dunn made two enforced changes with on-loan striker Matty Tymon returning to Hartlepool United for treatment on a groin injury, and wing-back Brian Close a late withdrawal for personal reasons. In came Ged Dalton for a first competitive start in a Whitby shirt, with Jimmy Beadle returning to midfield as Ibby Hassan replaced Close on the right.

The changes seemed to work okay as the Seasiders led inside 13 minutes. A corner was played out to Hassan who drove a fine effort into the roof of the net from the edge of the area- the versatile youngster's first ever goal for the club.

At the other end, the ever-dangerous Lee Morris beat a marginal offside call and forced Whitby's former hull City goalkeeper Tom Woodhead into a tremendous save with a vicious half volley on the half hour mark. But the Blues looked to have sealed the win four minutes later when great skill from Dalton set up Karl Charlton for a tap in at the far post.

Whitby were rocked early in the second half, however, when Woodhead suffered a broken nose after an aerial collision two minutes after the restart- veteran Dave Campbell took the gloves to make his 388th appearance. And Campbell was a busy man as four minutes later, substitute Andy Holt rounded him but could only hit the side netting.

Morris dragged an angled drive against the far post as the onslaught continued, and Campbell did well to block Danny Clarke's low goalbound drive.

The 39-year-old stopper then pulled off an important stop as the ball flew through a ruck of players. Campbell and the Blues defence did enjoy some brief respite when Beadle laid off for Town skipper Tony Hackworth to drill a 20-yard free-kick straight at Frickley keeper Ben Simpson. Then, Charlton's deft attempted chip after more neat work from Dalton, again picked out Simpson.

But Billy Heath's side were soon back at the Whitby end and finally levelled on 90 minutes when Holt poked home on the line after Campbell misjudged a high cross. With five minutes of injury time announced, there were a few jitters around the Turnbull Ground. Liam Gildea replaced Ged Dalton on the hour mark, and later there was a popular return of talismanic forward Anthony Ormerod, coming on for Ryan Blott, after more than a season away from the club.

However, it was first substitute Gildea who brought about the winning goal. The combative striker fought hard to win the ball near the corner and cut into the box, setting up Charlton for another close range goal at the far post- the 21-year-old's third in two games.

Speaking after the match, Town manager Harry Dunn admitted his side rode their luck at times: "Frickley had as many chances in the second half as we did in the first and there were some little bits of bad defending. We were quite fortunate in the end. There's still a lot of hard work to do."
