Alex Janes' early strike and a second half Tony Hackworth spot-kick gave the Blues all three points against a Frickley side lacking the finishing touch in front of goal. Town got off to the perfect start as they came flying out of the traps in the first minute after Frickley's Phil Lindley had failed to clear the danger from a cross, allowing Janes to steer the ball home from close range. But the hosts, hoping to enjoy a change in fortunes following the recent appointment of former player Mark Hancock as boss, were keen to get their first win of the season and started to throw everything at the Blues' defence. First, Lee Morris scuffed his shot straight in to the arms of David Campbell after Andy Hayward squared the ball when through on goal. And lively winger Chris White saw his long-range effort comfortably saved. But Town continued to pose at threat at the other end with Karl Charlton's long-range effort testing Jon Hood in the Frickley goal, while Janes headed just over from a Charlton corner. Charlton's set pieces continued to threaten after the break and James Drinkall saw his header cleared off the line on 54 minutes. But Town got their second just before the hour mark as Hackworth sent Hood the wrong way from the spot after Chris Hilton hand-balled in the box. Whitby were happy to sit back as they looked to bag just their second win away from home. And their job was made easier thanks to the wayward finishing in the Frickley attack. Striker Hayward was guilty of a number of glaring misses while Ashley Lyth made two superb last-ditch tackles, first to deny Hayward and then to thwart substitute Ashley Flynn. Tony Hackworth had a late chance to put the icing on the cake but his effort was well saved by Hood. |
