FA Cup 2nd Qualifying Round

28th September 2005

Whitby Town 6 0 Trafford
Raw, Veart, Brown(3), Wilford

Attendance - 196

Team - Campbell, Hudson, Veart, Farthing, Nicholson, Scaife, Ormerod, Brown, Raw, Wilford, Batchelor subs McTiernan, Barber, Burke, Escritt

Report - by BJM - After scraping a 1-1 draw at Trafford on Saturday, Whitby grabbed their second chance firmly with both hands to make sure of a 3rd qualifying round game at Alfreton.
The game started in the best possible way for the Blues when Rooney's attempted clearance was blocked & the rebound fell kindly to Tom Raw who slotted the ball home from a tight angle in the 2nd minute. After that it was fairly even until the 32nd minute when Whitby had a 'goal' ruled out. Shortly afterwards they struck the bar & something ominous was on the cards.
The second half was a rout with Whitby gaining in confidence as the goals flew past Rooney. Craig Veart's masterful free kick curled inside the right hand post in the 50th minute to make it 2-0 which opened the floodgates. Andy Brown netted a hat trick in the following 25 minutes before Aron Wilford scored a peach of a goal from the edge of the area into the far top corner of the net in the 86th minute.
All in all a remarkable result made all the more amazing considering Whitby had so many players injured. Chris Batchelor made his debut with a solid display replacing the injured Karl Richards, Chris Hudson played at right full back to cover for Brumwell & though McTiernan was named as a substitute, he was too injured to play. Mark Barber made his debut in the second half for Ormerod, Burke replaced Hudson & our new 'striker' Ben Escritt came on for Tom Raw in the dying minutes.
Cammy's tremendous last minute save at Trafford made this evening possible. Well done Cammy!
